I've been thinking that the western Mediterranean rim from Valencia through Lombardy would have made a fine country, and as linguistically cohesive a nation-state as our France or Italy. Underrated alternate history possibility, diverging in the late medieval/early modern period.#thoughts #alternatehistory #maps

Could Switzerland have swelled, extending over *much* more of the Italian and French Alps? Could there also have been an independent Aquitaine (southwest France) and an independent state covering the Massif Central, another Switzerland but à la française? Ooh...#thoughts #alternatehistory #mapsMap is by Technob105 of Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 3.0). Photo is of Puy de Sancy, the Massif's highest point.

But for a twist of fate France may have fragmented like the rest of the Holy Roman Empire did. If so, the southern little Frances could easily coalesce not with the langues d'oïl again, but rather with Catalonia and northern Italy, which they're arguably closer to anyway. 🤔#thoughts #alternatehistory #mapsAs late as 1477 France was a feudal patchwork, not that different from Germany. Map by Zigeuner (original), Kaiser Torikka (translation), both of Wikimedia Commons (CC-BY-SA 3.0).

@adamasnemesis Yeah, the "lost" state of Franklin here in the U.S. could have really changed Appalachia for the better instead of leaving it divided out between KY, TN, VA, NC, & WV. OTOH, look how WV turned out, so maybe not. #mightabeen

@adamasnemesis A strong nation should have access to two seas, look at Italy, France and Spain, even the US.

@Younes Meh, it's certainly an advantage, but Austria, the Netherlands, and Portugal had access to just one sea during their stints as great powers, so lacking it is obviously not all that debilitating.
