Should I change servers? I signed up on this one when I started because I didn't know where to pick, but now I'm learning that changing servers includes making another account and creating aliases, etc. This can't be right...right? We'd do this every time we want to try a new server?

@johno_wells Well, yes, a new server requires a new account on that server. Aliasing is not a requirement but it allows followers of the old account to find the new account. It's not that hard to migrate but it's not a one-click process either. (And it's a lot more possible than migrating from walled gardens like Twitter.) There are helpful guides available.

@doctroid thanks. I've found the guides. Pretty crazy. Like we have to understand the platform and the "right thing to do" before we sign up. What I'm wondering is if it actually matters. I see people from other servers here. Thoughts on that?

@johno_wells I don't see it as "crazy" nor that you "have to" understand the nuances before signing up. The big servers for instance are perfectly fine for anyone starting out. And may be fine for most people forever. But if you want to make a change, it's maybe a 10 minute process once you've picked an instance to move to.

@doctroid @johno_wells i found people through hashtags, pretty easily found all the modular ppl lol.I feel it to be much more of a collectivist mindset around interests, rather than which server you're on. It's like an email address, Gmail or Hotmail or AOL (haha).

@yougenius @doctroid Here's a thought...I'm not a "scroll the feed" kinda guy (like on FB--holy crap), unless my feed is carefully curated to be only what I want to scroll (like on IG--all modular--all happy scroll). So if I'm not scrolling what's up on the .world server...does it really matter what server I'm on? Sorry if this ramble doesn't make sense.lol

@johno_wells Size matters in a few ways. Bigger servers federate with more other servers making it easier to find and connect to other people. On the other hand bigger servers come with more jerks who need to be moderated, and moderation gets geometrically harder with increased size. If you have concerns it may be harder to get them addressed. Big servers also (as we're seeing today) are becoming acquisition targets by capitalists.

@johno_wells @doctroid totally. My home timeline is beautiful modular and synth stuff. I don't often go on the Local TL except to maybe find a new person to follow. Since you can also follow hashtags the local and federated timelines are more for interest rather than directly useful.

@yougenius ok--thank you! But, as someone else said here--you'll on;y see the hashtag you're following on the server you're on. So this is the thing---how do I find out where a specific scene is without joining servers, creating aliases, instances, redirects, etc.I'm not trying to be a whiner, I promise. Just hoping to gain some perspective and "do it right" as much as I can.

@johno_wells Reacting to "you'll on;y see the hashtag you're following on the server you're on". This is not accurate. You'll see *all* content tagged with the hashtag you follow, from all servers *currently federating* with your instance. It's a discovery process which is automatic at the server level and the number of servers federated (linked) grows with time. If you follow some account on another server explicitly, then your server, if it didn't already, will start tracking what happens on that other server too.@yougenius

@samae @yougenius Thank you so much for the education here. Really appreciate everyone's help. I'm going to have to do some more reading---like *currently federating* - have no idea what that is.

@johno_wells Sorry if that was a lot at once :) Two temporary parting gifts:- What's the fediverse (not technical) video: https://framatube.org/w/9dRFC6Ya11NCVeYKn8ZhiD- Here's the actual list of all the servers currently federating with *your* server/instance (which is mastodon.world): https://mastodon.world/api/v1/instance/peers. If an instance is in this list (look for mine! It's bidule.menf.in) it means you will be able to get the public timeline info from them. For example, if you list all the posts tagged with #eurorack, it will be searched through this list of servers. This list grows in time, or shrinks if some servers get blacklisted by your admin.@yougenius
