I have a really bad habit of turning fun hobbies into jobs and then losing the enjoyment of them as a result. Hacking, soccer, music, etc. are all examples of where this has happened.I'm trying really hard not to let that happen with #aviation. I will not become an instructor as some have asked. I will not go for a commercial license and I definitely will not be changing careers.What I am realizing however is how many hidden ways there are that this could happen. It's why I'm not letting myself get sucked down the YouTuber route or doing an aviation podcast series, etc. Anything that becomes a commitment in that way threatens to ruin what right now is just an enjoyable activity.

@alyssam_infosec I have the same problem, but in my case it's due to ADHD. My brain's natural lack of dopamine incentivizes me turning hobbies into money

@malwaretech I've had many "lay" people suggest that I have some level, albeit high functioning, ADHD. And things like this make me wonder too. But my therapist says no I don't fit the profile so *shrugs*

@alyssam_infosec @malwaretech My gp recognized correctly that since I’m capable of crashing comfortably to sleep after downing grams of caffeine I had ADHD.No other doctor listened when I mentioned the paradoxical reaction.Question your therapist what aspect of that diagnostic you don’t seem to fit. Because likely it’s just something they didn’t know you live through.

@Aphrodite @alyssam_infosec One thing I did notice moving here, is it's very hard to get an accurate diagnosis in the US. ADHD is usually an issue for specialist psychiatrists and even then they are reluctant to diagnose because of stupid liability due to TheWarOnDrugs™. I had 3 flat out refuse to see me because "I'm probably just seeking drugs".

@malwaretech I managed to get diagnosed when I had a battery of tests done by a neuropsychologist. The bulk of the tests were to confirm that I was on the spectrum but she offered to throw in a couple for adhd too. I had to take that diagnosis to a psychiatrist to start getting the meds to treat it. @Aphrodite @alyssam_infosec
