What do others in #SocialCoop think about us becoming a Mastodon Gold or Platinum tier sponsor for Mastodon? We could maybe give it a try for few months, might be that it attracts new members whose membership fees exceed the cost of sponsorship?

@LeoSammallahti Aren’t still in the process of figuring out how much S.C is willing to give. From results of the vote I don’t think it fits Gold

@django I thought that was just unconditional donation. Think it would require another discussion and vote to decide whether to do a sponsorship that includes Social Coop getting promotion in exchange.

@LeoSammallahti @django I don't get it. We are not a foundation. I think we help Mastodon most by building a thriving democratic and cooperative current and helping others do the same.

@Matt_Noyes @LeoSammallahti @django I think Loomio might have swallowed the comment. But I pointed out there that funding someone to develop patches for Mastodon to make it more useful for social.coop and other co-op servers, might be a better use of your surplus than subsidising Eugen's salary and the hosting costs of his two big servers.

@strypey I agree, but at the moment the #MastodonGGmbH #OpenCollective is one of the easiest ways to fund a #MastoDev, including people who work on forks. See where the money goes:https://opencollective.com/mastodonOf course there are other #fediverse projects too, but the case for #SocialCoop financial contributions is most compelling for software the coop relies on.@Matt_Noyes @LeoSammallahti @django

@nemobis> the MastodonGGmbH OpenCollective is one of the easiest ways...Easy yes, but not necessarily the best way. A number of comments in the Loomio discussion objected to using co-op funds to support a BDFL model, and to subsidise non-coop servers. Social.coop has a tech team who could deploy those same funds. Eg to pay people to patch Mastodon for co-ops use, or to set up other hosted services for social.coop members.@Matt_Noyes @LeoSammallahti @django

@strypey I agree in principle. Yes, the tech team *could*, but at 200 $/month the cost of directly overseeing development would probably be more than what actually gets into the developer's hands. So it's not clear it would be a net benefit for anyone. If #SocialCoop run on #Hometown, would it also require it to be a coop before contributing? Should a coop refuse to pay power or water or snow cleaning of its street unless the provider is a coop?@Matt_Noyes @LeoSammallahti @django

@nemobis> the cost of directly overseeing developmentIs what exactly? > Should a coop refuse to pay power or water or snow cleaning of its street unless the provider is a coop?If it can provide these services itself, or pay another co-op to do so, then yes. I think it's strategically wise, as well as consistent with co-op principles, to avoid sending a co-op's money outside the co-op economy where possible. @Matt_Noyes @LeoSammallahti @django

@strypey> If it can provide these services itself, or pay another co-op to do so, then yes. Where's the limit? If the coop can get water itself at one million times the going price by employing someone to go fetch it with a bucket from the nearest river, should it?@Matt_Noyes @LeoSammallahti @django

@nemobisIt seems like you have an axe to grind and I'm not particularly interested in debating edge cases. Maybe go read and comment on the relevant Loomio discussion if you have a stake in this decision?@Matt_Noyes @LeoSammallahti @django

@strypey @nemobis the web app allows muting threads, but only a few mobile apps do this, others propose muting the note author
