Question Mastodonians, I just received an alert from a friend that there are numerous fake fediverse accts pretending to be me across servers. How do I combat this? It’s not only scary, but creepy. They were searching for me from the bird, and they’re using that picture. Has to be at least 5 or 6 😕

@cooltxchick You can verify yourself if you have a website into which you can put code from Mastodon. If you have WordPress, there are plugins that will do this.https://opensource.com/article/22/11/verified-mastodon-websiteThat way at least your links in your profile will show as verified, people will have some confidence you are the genuine article.

@cooltxchick Having said that, I just found that my own efforts to self-verify don't seem to have shown up in my profile, so I'm not sure how to fix that. Anybody at @SDF got a clue? I've checked the meta data on my websites and the Mastodon data is there. #mastodonverification #mastodonhelp

@jjlewis @cjonthehudson @cooltxchick @julieb42 Looking into this, it is a little confusing, but here is some guidance here:https://opensource.com/article/22/11/verified-mastodon-wordpressAlso looking to see what we can do to help facilitate this. Thank you for your patience, we'll get it sorted out!

@jjlewis @cjonthehudson @cooltxchick @julieb42 Also, the mechanism for verification is likely a queued fetch when you set it up, so it may take some time to process as you can imagine things are quite busy. But give it time, we'll get better at it!

@SDF @jjlewis @cooltxchick @julieb42 Thanks for looking into this. My verifications I believe were entered during the "dark time" of the server disruptions. Wonder if deleting the links in my profile and adding them again would help kickstart anything.

@SDF @jjlewis @cooltxchick @julieb42 Thanks for the article, that's pretty much the one I followed, except that on my WordPress sites I found using a plug-in much easier than breaking into a theme and adding code that would disappear with the next update. Can confirm that the proper information appears in my metadata.

@SDF @jjlewis @cooltxchick @julieb42 Deleting my sites and adding them back cured the problem, so I'll assume it's because I queued the verification request during the server problem

@SDF @jjlewis @cooltxchick @julieb42 I also added the verification link into my WordPress user profile, which it wasn't clear I needed to do as well as putting it in the metatext. So one or the other or both fixed the problem.

@SDF @jjlewis @cooltxchick @julieb42 Although, having done that AND checked another Mastodon account I have on another very small server, I'm not seeing any verification there either so maybe the plug-in isn't doing its job somehow.

@cjonthehudson @SDF @jjlewis @cooltxchick Thanks, everyone. I'm rolling my own website, so that could be the problem. I'll take another look in depth this weekend.

@julieb42 @cjonthehudson @jjlewis @cooltxchick Hello, it does look like verification gets queued when a user sets this up. Not sure, the exact amount of time it took, but it does work, just be patient.
