A few weeks ago, Nate Silver tweeted that he was excited Elon was going to get rid of all the "hall monitor types." Nate was talking about me, specifically, but meant any journalist who pointed out hypocrisy or full-on hate speech. Elon copied the language in a subsequent tweet. I think it played a part in making Elon think "elite journalists" are on his side.

@adamdavidson I guess for me the question is: why purge anyone?Fix the algo so that it stops promoting drama and keeps the focus on insightful stuff, like on Slashdot.Journalists are cheerleaders for an industry that got killed by the USA Today effect, cable news, and the internet.

@adamdavidson he didn’t say he wanted elon to get rid of them. He said mastodon seemed like a honey trap for them. And honestly my biggest worry about this platform is that it will be an ideological monoculture. The mirror image of truth social. Twitter was great precisely because it included some people with challenging perspectives.

@timlee @mauriejmanning But you're making a stronger claim: you introduced the "mirror image" language. Mastodon/Truth Social. Same Same. But that's obviously not true. Even if Mastodon is what you fear it is, it's not MTG, Q, Truth Social. I would like to know, more clearly, what your fears are.

@adamdavidson @mauriejmanning well sure I didn’t even consider joining truth social because lol. My concern is that most mainstream conservatives will either stay on Twitter or go to a right-wing site like truth social and it will intensify the tendency toward ideological echo chambers.

@timlee @adamdavidson Maybe I was following the wrong people on Twitter (too many political people?) but I am astonished by the numbers of fascinating folks HERE talking the Sciences, History, Journalism, and Arts - from all over the world. There’s so much more to life than red/blue. Except for their civility, I have no idea of their politics. Follow everyone you find interesting, and weed out later if you have to. It’s #FollowFriday BTW - good way to get a start.
