       I'm trying to figure out how to feel after this midterm election. It feels like we live in a different/better country than I thought we did on Monday. Like six years of panic has begun to be released. That's probably too optimistic. But having trouble calibrating. you?

       To all the lovely people who sent good wishes, I am shocked and overjoyed to report that our orange tabby, marmalade, came home--no explanation--a week after disappearing. Very hungry but seems healthy. A very happy #caturday Orion seems curious.

       A note to folks on Journa.Host:I would strongly recommend NOT setting up automatic cross-posting from twitter. Mastodon is a different sort of place. It invites more conversation.        One thing I'd be thinking about--if I were a journalist or journalistic institution still actively using the birdsite--is what is coming next? At some point, staying is endorsing. And this is clearly just the beginning of what Elon will do.

       A few weeks ago, Nate Silver tweeted that he was excited Elon was going to get rid of all the "hall monitor types." Nate was talking about me, specifically, but meant any journalist who pointed out hypocrisy or full-on hate speech. Elon copied the language in a subsequent tweet. I think it played a part in making Elon think "elite journalists" are on his side.

       @timlee @mauriejmanning But you're making a stronger claim: you introduced the "mirror image" language. Mastodon/Truth Social. Same Same. But that's obviously not true. Even if Mastodon is what you fear it is, it's not MTG, Q, Truth Social. I would like to know, more clearly, what your fears are.

       @jeffjarvis @ianhillmedia @dansinker Journalists have outsourced far too many of the key decisions of our era to private companies. We have let unnamed people at twitter, FB, etc, decide how our stories will be shared, how we will engage our audience. Journalism needs to take ownership of these questions. The fediverse is, right now, the best way to do that. Though it would be great if there were other ways. So, no. It's not some indulgence. It's necessary investment.

       Dear Academics:I am embarking on a massive book project that involves reading countless journal articles and books. How do you keep track of all of your notes, citations, etc? Is Zotero the standard? Do people use Obsidian or other tools to find commonalities? I've only just begun and am already overwhelmed.

       It's been fascinating reading the internal conversation at Fox News revealing they knew the election conspiracy was nuts but promoted it anyway. I'm working on a book about documents from the ancient Near East. Increasingly, I think, historians wonder how "accurate" many old documents are and how much are BS propaganda. Makes me think the Fox News BS machine may be representative of eternal toadyism.
