Earlier this year, I became aware of STANDARD EBOOKS, a donation-dependent group of edtiors and layout experts who have been doing the amazing work of taking out-of-copyright books, turning them into top-quality ebooks, and then releasing them for free.Some of the books they've done are in the Internet Archive here:https://archive.org/details/standardebooksThey're seeking 75 patrons in December to keep themselves afloat, consider donating to this amazing cause.https://standardebooks.org/ebooks

It is really important to support reputable publishers making these gems available to all. @magneticcrow @LucyWildboots @ryanschultz I knew using the phrase "editing" would be confusing for some, but there I go."Editing" in this case is verifying no transcription errors, formatting for ebooks including making sure words aren't truncated or the chapters wrong, making sure of no issues with utf-8 sorts of issues, etc. Pure cleanup, no adding or subtracting.

@textfiles This group has the nicest and most sophisticated ebook CSS specs I've ever seen! That's the main difference between them and Gutenberg, in answer to several questions in this thread -- they so far haven't published anything Gutenberg hasn't, but they're designed from the bottom-up to look great on your Kindle.

@textfiles The Standard Ebooks web site recommends complaining to Amazon in a few places - so I used the feedback box on my Kindle to rant to Amazon about them not properly supporting AZW3 files despite it being their own proprietary format!

@textfiles This is a fantastic project, and it circles back to what my mom did for her dissertation—producing the authoritative text for Mark Twain’s Life on the Mississippi. It was part of the Iowa-California Twain Project, although she is mentioned nowhere in this account: https://www.marktwainproject.org/about_projecthistory.shtml. (Her dissertation director was Paul Baender, who is pictured. He wanted her to get Huck Finn, but patriarchy won that one.)

@textfiles I sent the a donation earlier in the yr as the quality of classic ebooks they produce is truly the gold standard. I look forward to a day after I die when the copyright has expired on my current faves and they can receive this treatment.Thanks for the reminder, will look into re-upping.

@textfiles I'll just point out that I've got public domain e-books too, and you can read them directly in the browser, with built-in notes, audiobooks, dark mode, and text resizing. In the time it takes you to load that Standard E-Book into a Calibre server and get it onto your e-reader device, you could be halfway through one of my e-books on your phone or laptop. @textfiles There is a similar project in Australia, https://untapped.org.au/?amp=1 which is preserving those books important to our cultural heritage but which were pre-digital. Print is limited and so many could be lost forever. It’s fabulous.
