There really should be a bigger presence of Black users in Mastodon than there currently is and I think that folks really should reflect on why Mastodon remains an overwhelmingly white space.

@BlackAzizAnansi To answer your question: Many have given up on Twitter & are now using Instagram as it’s replacement (no, I kid you not!). I see unclickable links & screen shots of articles frequently on Instagram now. It’s quite annoying.

@BlackAzizAnansi Imo it's a combination of a huge misinformation campaign telling none-white folks that we aren't welcome here, a general unwillingness to compromise or curate own experience or engage with anything that isn't just a copy of twitter, and seriously misunderstanding of the difference between censorship and being asked to tag/cw toots because this isn't twitter and we work on the basis of consent and not clout here.

@DangerHissy @BlackAzizAnansi yes, when those rules and expectations have a discriminatory effect, are applied in a discriminatory fashion, or were developed taking into account only a narrow portion of the population. Rules that are not open to examination, discussion, and periodic revision likely meet one of those criteria by definition.

@BlackAzizAnansi @LowlyAdjunct I just don't see how asking people to tag is discriminatory. Tag it, people who want to engage will, and those who don't won't. That's not censorship that's giving people the option to consent to engaging in potentially triggering situations and as someone who Bites™️ when I'm triggered, trust me it's as much for everyone else's safety as it is mine. There is no downside to tagging unless your goal is to trigger others, which begs the question; why?

It harms people outside your community who will be triggered & spiral as helplessness sets in. It harms those of us whose nervous systems don't differentiate between direct immediate threat and unexpectedly being exposed to something that trips those same trauma responses. The only people it doesn't harm are the ones who don't care anyway

Pointing out racism or people who claim to be allies telling you not to talk about it openly because your experience makes them uncomfortable? @BlackAzizAnansi @LowlyAdjunct no one is saying you can't discuss racism or bigotry. I certainly haven't. Asking you to tag isn't silencing you. It's asking you to consider that not everyone is ready, able or safe to engage with what you're talking about and give them the option instead of throwing it in their faces without warning.

That is abuse of them as people. It’s also extremely harmful to our entire society to hide the evidence of racism and legacy of slavery: if we don’t fully deal with that, we will *always* be vulnerable to fascism.
