“You can find us anywhere you get your podcasts.”I *adore* this phrase, because it has been like two whole-ass decades and not one single venture capital darling has managed to unseat plain RSS as the distribution method for podcasts. Not one. (And they have really tried!)Podcasts are just out there, like air. You don’t go to one place to get them; you get them from everywhere and anywhere. You can choose how you want to engage with them and manage them and it is legitimately heartwarming that nothing has ever gotten in the way of that being a fundamental fact. This is the best of what the web is. It will never have a stock ticker or even a marketing scheme. Most people don’t even know it is there. But it endures (past the many, many attempts by squillionaire corporates to kill it) because of its absolute unshakable utility. My suggestion: any time you hear “anywhere you get your podcasts”, send a little thanks to RSS for keeping the real web alive.#RSS #Podcasts #ProtocolsNotProducts

RSS is great. For podcasts, but also for updates from websites. I've got my news app in nextcloud, and it's just become where I get my news because it brings a bunch of totally different news sources together.Friendica has a really cool feature where you can subscribe to RSS feeds and they just show up on your feed. I ended up migrating to another platform, but that's one big feature I miss from that platform.

@attacus I love RSS. If people realize how useful it is, how much control they have over their digital consumption, I think they'd all adopt it like it's the new, hot thing.

@mrvapor @attacus I think RSS will be used to advertise the heat death of the Universe. After it happens.

@attacus sometimes I feel like I’m the last person that still gets their news from #rss.

@hollie @nabsiddiqui @attacus I use RSS too (besides podcasts), but I must say I still have to met anybody IRL using it.

@otyugh @hollie @attacus I'v suggested it to people all the time. They just say "Oh sounds cool." I honestly don't even know how people can deal with the onslaught of news without RSS.

@nabsiddiqui I don't even use it that much for news. To me it's a way to follow blogs that do 2-3 article a year, filter content (sometimes a newspaper will release a shitload of stuff, and you are only interested in one author), and mostly, because there are a lot of artist that do the "one drawing a week" I'm hooked to. ^^'I mostly follow the news from second hand. I use Pleroma for that.

@nabsiddiqui @hollie @attacus Also the hard part to make someone use RSS is the client choice. What do you use people ?The best for me was QuiteRSS, I took some time to find it (also I skipped it at first because I thought it was ugly : it's hard for me to advice its use considering my first gut reaction to it :p)

@nabsiddiqui Interesting, never heard of RSS through a e-ink reader, seems fun ! I would like to read more on e-ink instead of computer screens too :(

@otyugh It doesn't work that well. You basically use the Kindle experimental browser to go the site. There was one a while ago that used to deliver content automatically, which shut down.

@nabsiddiqui Yeah it'd be nice too if we could install some proper linux distro on theses e-ink devices and use proper softwares instead of shacky bordeline uses.

@otyugh @nabsiddiqui @attacus I've been using NetNewsWire but I might switch back to Inoreader now.I tried Feedly off and on for years and always had problems with it. It seems to be the perfect choice for a lot of folks but just wasn't for me.

@attacus RSS survives bc it is not used by the masses. I hope it stays just under the radar judt like bittorrent does. We saw what happened to "mastodon" and the fedi is frightened.

@attacus I always thought "get them from wherever you get your podcasts" was code word for "get them from some big corporation like Apple/Google/Amazon because we don't have them on our website, let alone in a machine readable form [like RSS]".Whenever I hear this catch phrase, I give up. Please, podcasters, just put your content on your website. You can keep putting it in app stores too, but not everyone likes app stores.
