In February 1980, Mattel released Major League Baseball for the #Intellivision – a milestone for sports sims. Unlike the simplified arcade and home baseball games that came before it, MLB made full use of the Intellivision controller's complex array of buttons, providing precise control over running, pitching and fielding. In their advertisements, Mattel took aim at the outdated graphics and gameplay of #Atari's Home Run. Grimace at this classic commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GK9sK_iTWAQ. #retrogaming

Second in Mattel’s February 1980 #Intellivision lineup was NBA Basketball. Take the side-on forced perspective of #Atari’s Basketball, add two computer-controlled players to each side and some complicated Intellivision controls for passing and shot type (set shot or jump) and there you have it. It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out how to score goals even without an opponent to operate the second controller – the computer players would block me every time. #retrogaming
