I’m up to 1979, and that means it’s time to play Ultima-prequel-sort of, Akalabeth, from the #AppleII! Or so I thought, until I found out that (contra Wikipedia, which I must go update) it had actually come out in 1980. I thought this looked a little too technically advanced…#retrogames

As much as I want to get on to 1980, I’m hopping back into the time machine again to 1976, to play The Dungeon (aka pedit5), the earliest surviving computer #RPG. The Dungeon inspired ‘dnd’, which inspired Moria, which inspired Oubliette, which inspired Wizardry, which inspired… well, the much of the genre of Western and #JRPGs.The Dungeon was originally on the PLATO mainframe network, and today is playable on cyber1.org. #retrogaming #crpgs

If you complained about #TheLastOfUs being remade so soon, you may wish to take to the forums for this one: #TempleOfApshai (1979) was remade only 6 years later as Temple of Apshai Trilogy (1985). It also bundled in some add-ons (a la DLC) and the DOS version included upgraded CGA graphics.#RetroGaming #RPGs

One paragraph review: Temple of Apshai (1979) is an early microcomputer RPG, released after pre-Rogue rogue-like Beneath Apple Manor. It's purely 2D turn-based dungeon crawling. There's no goal, except for collecting treasure, buying equipment, and diving deeper into the dungeon. There are no spells, no character classes, no leveling up. It *does* have more sophisticated combat that previous computer RPGs, with three different melee attacks and ranged weapons. Worth a look.#retrogaming #rpgs

@mjgardner That would have been great. I was pondering getting a C64 Maxi (https://retrogames.biz/products/thec64/) to play a bunch of Epyx games that ship with it (including Temple of Apshai Trilogy), but couldn't quite justify it to myself – so went with the DOS version.

My last #Atari2600 game from 1979: Miniature Golf. There were earlier golf games (including Golf (1978) on Philips Videopac G7000), but this might be the first *mini golf* game. The controls take some getting used to. Your aim and power are determined by the relative position of a blue square representing your 'club' to the dot representing the ball.I imagine this would actually be pretty fun in 2 player. Less so by yourself. (Or maybe its just that I'm really bad at it.) #retrogaming #atari

The arcade version of Atari’s #Battlezone (1980) was a groundbreaking game, introducing players to the thrill of first-person shooter gameplay in wireframe 3D graphics. But the #Atari2600 version means so much more to me. #retrogames

In February 1980, Mattel released Major League Baseball for the #Intellivision – a milestone for sports sims. Unlike the simplified arcade and home baseball games that came before it, MLB made full use of the Intellivision controller's complex array of buttons, providing precise control over running, pitching and fielding. In their advertisements, Mattel took aim at the outdated graphics and gameplay of #Atari's Home Run. Second in Mattel’s February 1980 #Intellivision lineup was NBA Basketball. Take the side-on forced perspective of #Atari’s Basketball, add two computer-controlled players to each side and some complicated Intellivision controls for passing and shot type (set shot or jump) and there you have it. It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out how to score goals even without an opponent to operate the second controller – the computer players would block me every time. #retrogaming
