Dear #fedi (and #mastodon ) what do you feel about possible inclusion of options for #newsfeed #algorithms in the fedi, even if your instance doesnt choose to have one? Boost for more dataEdit: we could also ignite a conversation on the reasons behind your opinion below or on your own profile :) helps with the nuance and could possibly help overcome sampling bias.

There's really nothing wrong with an algorithm that basically says "based on your 'likes' you might find this interesting" what's wrong is the way that Google & Facebook have created algorithms that are intended to keep you on the site longer so you see more ads and the AI works out that showing increasingly extreme content is the best way to achieve this. If someone releases a suitable add-in for Friendica, I might install it on my instance to see if it improves my experience. What I would be opposed to would be the Mastodon approach where there is "One true AI" that the whole world has as its only option. The Fediverse is all about user freedom.

@juliaclement I think its a slippery slope. The moment we decide its okay for an algorithm to study someone's likes and the kind of content it likes (using certain keywords and such), it would then become increasingly difficult to draw the line with time.

have it run on your own computer, under your control, keeping the collected data and the derived recommendations strictly under your control. it's not hard, and it solves the problem.

@lxoI would only accept algorithms for media hosting platforms and streaming services. For microblogging algorithms are actually pretty harmful and pointless because:1. You wouldn't want to save your data for long periods of time here anyway.2. It's meant to be your personal diary/news feed.3. The algorithms are the sole cause of addiction and time-wasting.4. The algorithms don't actually matter because people follow each other and thus cross-promote each other.5. Likes incentivize popularity contests, posts don't get a distributed attention from people and thus only the most attention-grabbing posts go to the top. Unlike with music or videos, short messages require way less attention span.6. We have hashtags and bots for self-promotion.The algorithms will actually **interfere** with the existing mechanisms and render them obsolete. In comparasence, media hosting platforms and streaming services don't have such mechanisms to begin with, there is no social aspect beyond friends lists and comment sections. @edendestroyer

@lxoAlso, I do wish the recommendation algorithms ran locally, that would be very based. Wish we had a service like Spotify that functioned like that and didn’t require JavaScript or uBlock Origin. I would also not mind crypto mining inside the browser as long as it’s libre, private and unintrusive. And does not rely on advertisements (looking at you, Brave).@edendestroyer

@edendestroyerHey. I’m no crypto bro, Bitcoin is still a scam. But this is the least problematic method to generate profit. The only other ways are ransom subscriptions (which lock content behind a paywall), ad harrassment, donations (which are hard to sustain) or merch (which is slightly better but requires good branding and a big enough audience). Pick your poison. If you can survive on donations, go for it. If you can sell merch, that’s epic and probably your best bet. But the (user-respecting) crypto mining is the third best, aside from a completely anonymous paid subscription with no credentials other methods are just garbage and I will never watch an ad in my entire life, it’s a terrible way to get profits and should die and never return again. Profiting from ads is honestly the worst thing in existence and is the sole reason for the popularity of such proprietary rubbish as NordVPN and Raid Shadow Legends.@lxo

@edendestroyerI hate ads so much. They're the next thing in my list of the things I hate after proprietary spyware. Even if the software in question is libre, ads are still a form of a malicious feature that strengthens big corporations, promotes scams and faulty products and just waists people's time. Ads are defective by design, different from DRM in their horribleness only in terms of them not making software non-libre. Well, thanks for that at least. That's the least they can do to remedy themselves in my eyes somewhat.@lxo
