Hey, is there a non-agonizing way to convert a complicated .ai file that you made in #AdobeIllustrator to #Inkscape? Masto-life is making me want to move more fully into open source-villa, but I'm not finding it easy. (Please boost, I'm not sure how to reach the right audience for this question).

@alex_galt If memory serves, Inkscape natively supports reading the AI (Adobe Illustrator) file format and so it should already be possible to open the documents, and re-save them into standardized .svg files.

@jxself You’d think. I opened several and let’s just say it was a mess that would have taken considerable time to sort out. Layers were out of order, anything that involved transparency seemed out of sorts, etc.

@alex_galt @jxself Inkscape can't open AI files, and never could. What it does is opens the PDF file that is wrapped around the AI data, which can contain some, but not all of the information. The past nine weeks I've been grinding at the PDF importer to get better results. But there is also a plan a foot to fund development of an actual AI importer which should deliver results that aren't such a hack.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT1i1EQR04Y (first video)

@doctormo @alex_galt Thank you for that information. Do you have suggestions for @alex_galt in the meantime? What about exporting from AI into an .svg? Or any other ideas?

@jxself @alex_galt AI's SVG export plugin can give you the conversion you need. It really comes down to the set of features being used.If they still have the program, then giving it a go can help.I'd also be interested in test results. The HIGHLY unstable build here https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/jobs/3419887758/artifacts/browse/build/ might give interesting results. But I'm actually most interested in the wild feedback. (let me know if windows isn't the OS being used)

@jxself @doctormo Wow, seem to have gotten ahold of the right person. Thanks for the response, Martin! I’m glad to hear that there is a plan going forward. I can see the love and care that’s gone into Inkscape, for sure. I’ve now used it to create some new work and it’s a good tool that’s fit for purpose. Unfortunately, I’m sure like many, I have 1,000s of hours of work invested in .ai files, so that’s an impediment to fully transitioning. I’ll keep checking in.
