This is genius!#Berlin is allowing cyclists to claim on-street parking spaces for their bikes—for free.At the same time, they're boosting the price of on-street parking for drivers. That sends a very, very clear message.https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-12-07/berlin-s-new-parking-rules-set-up-showdown-between-bikes-and-cars

@straphanger The message is park your bike here and have it mangled by a vehicle. This is just foolish

@straphanger Do people not steal bikes in Berlin? And what's to stop a driver wanting to use the space from just moving the bike? I love the idea of giving space to bike parking, but how can this possibly work if you can't secure the bike?

@straphanger perhaps the photo isn’t a typical setup, but does this create a much higher risk for bike theft? How are the bikes secured if they use a street parking space?

In the United States, the most perfect murders can be committed by running over a cyclist, act as if it were an accident and act accordingly. Nothing will come of it. I suspect that in the Netherlands, that wouldn't play well, which is why they have such a robust bicycle culture. I haven't lived in Germany, so I have no reference.  Cyclists need more protection on all fronts and it goes way beyond silly gestures such as this one. If the lawmakers proposing this act were serious, why not allocate more space for bicycle parking instead? This particular example of an idea, is no solution at all. It will only cause deeper rifts, on a path, where there aught to be none.
