Had a fantastic time on a podcast this evening. It was supposed to be about DISCMASTER.TEXTFILES.COM but in our describing how Internet Archive worked and how the process was for adding/uploading things in force, one of the hosts started asking what steps we took to include diverse voices and materials in our stacks. And then things got good.

So, even though the Archive has an open door policy with a big red carpet saying to visit archive.org/upload and such, and you got people like me waving at it with a big huge ballyhoo, the co-host wanted to find out what, beyond that, I was doing to reach out to diverse communities to encourage them to contribute or use the archive to store their works. It's not enough to just have an unlocked door - how do you let people know they're welcome to enter?

And this has a double-edged answer for me.First, absolutely, it's an effort to reach out to other cultures, enclaves, groups and languages to give them the word they're welcome and can find a home at the archive, from both having such materials but also showing we treat them well.

And second, I said that one problem I often encounter is an understanding mistrust that a tech-valley startup-y internet-based library is really running with these groups' interests or well-being at heart. Are we just spouting "correct" rhetoric to sound like we care, or are we just going to colonize someone's uploads and wave them as a mascot of inclusiveness? This is not an easy situation. But as I promised on the podcast, I will redouble my efforts to welcome, outreach, and listen..

@textfiles have you reached out to various museums and estates and non-profits with large archives of content? I know you have worked with libraries but what about museums and other archive holders? Or non-profits like PhotoWings (https://photowings.org/about-us/ which is also based in SF and works in preserving large archives of photography)

@textfiles You may have to go out and find them. There are some communities that are trying to get their histories online and accessible. I attended a Zoom meeting last year where the organizers of an exhibit said they had so much more material than they could put in the exhibit, and didn't want to lose it to bitrot.Have folks look for local meetings and exhibits and there could be a way to build trust relationships that include participating in the archive.

@textfiles Funny you mention this, in many of the retro groups I dabble in, when I mention archive.org most europeans participating in those groups have either never heard of it or have some weird kind of distrust of it .. its bizarre .. With enough careful encouragement, they are generally amazed at what they find there..

@textfiles I really appreciate you sharing this and speaking openly about the challenges! 💖 I think many orgs are investing in really building relationships and trust, but it takes time and effort and the results may come more slowly than we might hope

@textfiles Well, the real question is how to find people when they're looking for ways to share their stuff. When a YouTuber laments that (yet another) video was taken down by Nintendo, they're looking for an audience. When an artist gets their art purged from DeviantArt, they're looking for an audience. But Archive.org feels more like a secret backup that somehow flies under the radar. (In my opinion that's part of why it works) But it doesn't really feel like it has much of an audience.

@textfiles I myself think of it as a backup.A secondary way to host things. With the primary way being to post art on places where people are already gathering, and will therefore notice. But also a place for the old files and programs I've collected over the decades... if I ever get around to it.

@textfiles I remember last year that NewGrounds seemed to do a pretty good job of reaching out to people fleeing Twitter. (Was it even a year ago?)
