You know you're in the #Highlands, when the major topic in the pub, on a Saturday night, is "cattle grids".#Scotland

@AeonMach You wouldn't believe what a wide ranging topic cattle grids can be. It started with a view that ever since a crofter got a grid installed, he acts like he owns the road (he doesn't).The topic then moved on to preferences for round bars or flat bars on the grids. Which effortlessly moved onto how slippy they are when wet or icy. Mountain bikers beware. Finally, the topic moved onto providing escape tunnels, under the grids, for any critters unlucky enough to fall into them.

@fitheach @AeonMach Maybe also add to the discussion how fast cars drive over them. We always slow down, it's how we were taught. Now cars fly over at normal speed. Does anyone slow down. Locals, visitors?

@norahmoo We have sections of the A82 (main trunk road from Inverness to Glasgow) with the speed restricted to 50mph. You can then turn-off this road onto a small, twisty, unclassified road (including cattle grids) where the spped limit is 60mph. Go figure!@AeonMach

@fitheach The one outside Lochinver has been a dreadful state for 20 years. The Council finally got a new one made about 5-7 years back. They brought it on site, and found.... it didn't fit. They now seem to have lost interest. Locals usually use only one lane, as the other one tests suspension to breaking point.#NotInterestedIfNotInverness
