Starting to feel the pain @jwz describes. It looked to me like Masto hosts were hitting. tbray.org in kind of a dumb way. So, here are the top fetchers of “Bye, Twitter”:160 hachyderm.io153 mastodon.social76 mas.to67 mstdn.social60 infosec.exchange57 fosstodon.org51 mastodon.online40 mstdn.ca36 mastodon.cloud35 mastodon.nz*grumble*

@timbray @jwz with a caching proxy between the Masto servers and the sites they’re checking, this is a simple problem to solve. Perhaps I’m overlooking something. The added benefit would be the ability to provide fediverse-wide measurement of social gestures such as link sharing.

@spidaman @timbray Getting every Mastodon instance operator to agree to re-centralize through a shared proxy sounds a lot more difficult (and probably politically untenable) than the far more obvious fix: The instance you post to should retrieve the link preview data, once. When it distributes your post to other servers, it should include that data with it, along with all the other metadata about the post, such as who you are.You don't need a proxy if you only download the URL once.

@jwz @spidaman Wow, it was fetched from 3639 separate mastodon instances. Didn't realize the number was getting that big.

@timbray @danhon @jwz @spidaman a very confusing thing about Mastodon follower counts is that it only shows the number of profiles /known to your own server/ - so you'll see a different count on https://fedi.simonwillison.net/@timbray@mastodon.cloud compared to https://mastodon.cloud/@timbraySame is true for like and boost counts as well - only the "home" server of the user will show accurate numbers
