Micro-investigation born out of discussion with an American friend:Apart from the U.S., in which countries do schools celebrate a pledge of allegiance or something similar? Here in Italy we don't have anything like that in schools and I'm pretty sure it's roughly the same throughout Europe. Or not?#PledgeOfAllegiance #School #Education

@Ca_Gi this is 100% crazy and most Americans know itAnd don't forget we added "Under God" in the 50s because we wanted to make sure that Americans weren't like those godless commies

@Ca_Gi I think this is unique to America & maybe a few authoritarian republics. Most nations, to my knowledge, do not do this as it's considered political indoctrination of the youth.

@darnell Same thing here. After the fall of fascism in 1945 we dismissed all this kind of things.

@Wy7usa @Ca_Gi @darnell Also in the Netherlands it is looked at as a very scary ultra nationalistic practice. Something only ultra right winged politicians plead for when elections approach.Illustration how a ‘normal’ Dutch person treats the flag….https://dutchreview.com/news/american-family-reddit-store-their-dutch-flag/

@Ca_Gi @darnell The only thing the USA changed at that time was the style of the hand salute, and then added "Under God".

@feld Uh! Interesting that it was added in the '50s! But that raises another (but Off-Topic) question: did also the motto "In God we trust" appear on on the 1-dollar bill during the same years?

@Ca_Gi @feld Yup! 1956.That's also when that phrase became the official motto of the U.S.It replaced the de facto motto, which was "E pluribus unum" ("Out of many, one"). 'Cuz establishment of a state religion is more important than uniting the people.
