This got me thinking about what the fediverse offers for younger users. At the moment, I would say not much. I'd be very interested to hear from parents who currently have young children or grandchildren interested in technology. If you could wave a digital wand and create the ideal online social experience for your kids, what would it look like and how would it work to protect their wellbeing and teach them good digital habits?

I don’t really have any idea, but if I was to advocate anything, it might include features that augment their offline world, that focus on creating vs. consuming and strengthen community values, character and mental health. @strypey

@strypey here in NZ, concerning adults, there are NZ Government Post-Graduate Certificates Of Post-Secondary IT Training Business Purchases ; I don't think the purveyors of the former are capable of regulating the correct interaction of predatory international corporations to neglected children. In the interview, the representative points out that caregivers should be providing their children rich and fulfilling lives outside of social media giants but that seems to speak to the problem itself.

@tetrislife The online world vs. "real" world dichotomy is an illusion. I only realized this when I did a stunt that involved trying not to use the net for a whole year. It was really hard! Even in 2014, the two were increasingly overlapped. When I lived in China, social life was impossible without WeChat. For anyone under 30 (maybe even under 40), it's a continuum. For that reason, I totally agree with @jarom that apps need to facilitate and improve offline life.

@buzzy True, I remember my daughter really enjoying that back in the day. The contemporary equivalents seem to be Minecraft and Roblox. Although the youngsters I know also seem to spend a lot of time on YT Kids, FB Kids, and TikTok.

It would be fascinating to assemble a group of parents, kids, and technologists, give them an art room worth of craft supplies and a day or two to muck around with them, and see what sort of social software UX they could design together.#SocialDesign #collaboration #SocialSoftware #children

@strypey That’s akin to asking for the ideal smoking experience for kids. I think the ideal is post social media engagement - tools that facilitate meaningful individual or small group communication with friends and family. I don’t think that’s Fedi. I think it’s messaging and calling. I hope the social media wave has broken by the time my youngest are ready for it.

@jarom @strypey That would be great. Stimulating a good balance between off- and online activities. In terms of what Fediverse offers for kids.. there might be a host of instances with kids as their audience that only federate based on allowlists, in order to keep the space safe. The instances very well moderated, and allowing schools, teachers, educators, etc. on board along with the kids.

@smallcircles @jarom @strypeyThese are great suggestions. I've been thinking of how to design a project sharing community in the fediverse for our young digital makers at CoderLevelUp.org, for things like CoderDojo and coolest projects.Would be great to co-design... We've tried a lot of options in the last decade, and now interested in what a fedi experiment would look like - peertube or mastodon could work, maybe something more specific.

@davidcampey > I've been thinking of how to design a project sharing community in the fediverse for our young digital makers There's a few free code digital "portfolio" platforms, which I never really understood the use of, but I think they were kind of like Moodle for younger students (esp. primary). Mahana was one. Perhaps one of these could be AP-enabled? @mackiwg and @lightweight are two people likely to know about this stuff, or know who does. Maybe @doug also?@smallcircles @jarom

@danlovejoy I think a big part of the design problem with social software is the tendency to fudge these two together, to the point where all distinction between communication and self-promotion is lost. It may be possible to do both well in one system, but only with some conscious design choices, to help people understand which one they're doing when, and how.Coming back to your challenge, a social software for kids might be heavy on events (facilitating in-person) and private chat.(2/2)

@strypey @davidcampey @mackiwg @lightweight @doug @jarom For https://coding.social we also have an idea to start a Local Open Chapter Initiative (LOCI) where local communities and fediverse find touchpoints to work on creative things.Social Coding Movement is exploring the Free Software Development Lifecycle (FSDL) and its relationship to decentralized software (via the Fediverse).https://discuss.coding.social/t/idea-local-open-chapters-initiative-loci/42

@strypey @mackiwg @lightweight @doug @smallcircles @jaromThanks, have found https://mahara.org/"students and staff create their personal learning stories by uploading evidence of activities they have participated in, and embedding publicly accessible content they have previously put online"This is along the direction I'm thinking in. Less about "evidence", more sharing my project with peers.

@davidcampey @jarom @strypey You might have a look at #CEDO who have 2 matrix chatrooms CEDO-EU and CEDO-NL ..https://eerlijkdigitaalonderwijs.petities.nl/?locale=enWhich is more or less on-topic. I dropped the link of this thread in CEDO-EUJacob Weisz in the room mentioned that the posts should most likely be not publicly accessible as well, which would lead to fedi apps like #Hometown or #GoToSocial that support local-only posting.GoToSocial is also on Matrix and I believe is thinking of adding allowlist federation

@smallcircles @davidcampey @jarom @strypey Yeah, I think childrens' privacy laws really mean kids shouldn't be part of the larger fediverse, but perhaps a very closed down one, like where a bunch of schools created a heavily moderated federation of private posts only between school students, which is autodeleted regularly.I think we've strayed way too far from where we should be on healthy childrens' internet use in general.

@ocdtrekkieI get the motivation behind having schools set it up, but when I was a student I wouldn't want a social media presence that was moderated by people who could world punitive power over me. Also, I think schools would require some sort of real name policy which seems bad for student related data. Maybe workshops on how to moderate and how best to teach kids to keep themselves safe from trolls, spam, predators, and those interested in their data.

@seizemeans > when I was a student I wouldn't want a social media presence that was moderated by people who could world punitive power over me.This is a good point. I would suggest involving students as mods, with oversight from the staff to make sure they're not abusing it. One of the goals could be to teach conflict-resolution skills that would ideally spill out of the digital space into the playground.I agree with @ocdtrekkie about no real names, and no identifiable photos either.

@olamina In the first post in this thread I pointed out that corporations are already hijacking our kids attention with The Algorithms of centralized social media platforms. With the second post, I'm asking what we could build to replace them.> I'm not leaving that to a corporation. Absolutely. All the tech in the fediverse is...> community-owned and controlled. To build it, we first need to imagine it. Co-creation is the best way for community-owned tech to come into being.
