I already hate opening Twitter and it's worse now that I have to see Elon's dumb tweets every time I open it.

@trafotin Why do you have to see them? If you don't follow him, they won't be in your timeline. If you block him, retweets will show "this tweet is unavailable." And if you use tweetdeck instead of the other clients the algorithm won't shove his vitriol in your face.I do wish that people I list and follow wouldn't quote-tweet him, but that's not in the nature of twitter culture.

@trafotin This is something I've been trying to tell everyone for over a decade: Aside from an algorithm inserting random garbage in your timeline, your timeline is entirely made up of the people you follow and the things they boost (or retweet, in the case of Twitter).I.e. if you're seeing tweets from someone and you don't like it, unfollow them. If you're still seeing their tweets, unfollow whoever is retweeting them (or you can also use "turn off retweets" on the offending person, if that is still a feature on Twitter (I haven't been on there for three-four years)).If from time to time you can go "this person keeps posting stuff that doesn't spark joy in me, I'm going to unfollow them or turn off their retweets", then you will find that your timeline becomes a beautiful, flowering garden of things that make you happy.Of course, this is all irrelevant when an algorithm is inserting random garbage in your timeline.

@rose When you navigate to the homepage of Twitter Web, the top tweets below stuff you post are almost certainly about Elon. I don't follow nobody and the only reason I can surmise is he's using the system to artificially boost his own voice. There's no way he's the most popular voice on Twitter.

@eviloatmeal Yeah it's just random garbage. I have never followed anyone so it's proof it's just making somewhat educated guesses about my tweets. But I have never commented on Elon or anything so the only conclusion I can come to is the algorithm was tweaked by Elon to show him more often, because it wasn't this way before the acquisition.

@trafotin Not even - the algorithm, or any sort of machine learning / ai type stuff these days, is just an obtuse program that tries to maximise a set of numbers. In terms of recommending you tweets, the numbers involved are things like "number of retweets", "number of replies", and so on. So basically the algorithm is just a machine that shows you a thing and goes "is this something that makes you tap the screen for any reason?" and if someone taps on something it goes "OK, I'll add a +1 to my notes", and then shows you more of the stuff that makes other people tap.And then when you consider that saying stupid shit makes people yell at you, and preaching to the choir doesn't, it's obvious that you've invented a machine that amplifies stupid shit.So I doubt that Elon has done anything to the algorithm - it was always like this. He's just upped his "stupid shit" factor by an order of magnitude by swinging a figurative baseball bat around in the microservices.

@trafotin Sorry - I don't use twitter.com - I use tweetdeck. And I forget that that's not how others are consuming twitter content. tweetdeck shows me almost nothing except the content from accounts I either follow or list. Some suggested follows, no ads. However, if I do navigate to twitter.com now, I see nothing from EM - or about - presumably because I block him and follow few that talk about him. I do see some ads, which tweetdeck doesn't show me. And I do have a lengthy block list.I think you can tamp that content down even without switching to tweetdeck.
