Interesting to see this https://invidious.snopyta.org/watch?v=3gLZvJ307rw from @thelinuxEXP talking about whether #Linux users should want #proprietary software... it's an interesting musing. Nick - here's why I think proprietary software is inherently undesirable: https://davelane.nz/proprietary

@lightweight People who use such kernel don't even need to think about wanting proprietary software, as Linux is already full of it.GNU Linux-libre is what you want instead, but note you might have issues with hardware of bad quality. That's a nice long post, here's a shorter explanation: https://www.gnu.org/proprietary/

@lightweight The only reason I have Windows on a computer is for some proprietary design programs that the FOSS equivalent sucks big time. If AutoCAD (or TurboCAD), ZEMAX, and LtSpice had Linux equivalents...or they ran under WINE, then I wouldn't have Windows.

@Ralph058 if businesses demanded them, they would. I agree, the #FOSS options in the CAD space are not good enough (that's not true in many other fields). That said, FreeCAD is impressive (I think it's mostly 2D). So is Blender (Solid modelling and animation). I wonder what would happen if, as a strategic investment, AutoCAD-dependent businesses put a small amount of resource into building #FOSS options. In aggregate, I think it would revolutionise the industry & free many hostages.

@lightweight @Ralph058 #Freecad is a 3D parametric design suite - it's free to download and try.If you are looking for 2D, then #librecad is somewhat of an equivalent for Draftsight etc. It has some issues with large DXFs and DWGs but is good enough for quickly modifying or creating them

@aharsantIn the Masterton #FabLab we generally start the newbies on #inkscape for 2D stuff and (I know, not Free free) Tinkercad for 3D. #Freecad is just as opaque as #Blender for most of our 3D users, and for anyone who can code we get better results recommending #OpenSCAD. I really wish there was an Open version of Tinkercad. The nearest is an ancient app ArtOfIllusion.org (which I will be re-introducing to The Lab)@lightweight @Ralph058

@vik I am a novice but found that there's great content to learn #freeCAD. This series in particular does a great job of progressing a novice: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWuyJLVUNtc0UszswD0oD5q4VeWTrK7JC(not sure if this is the right account but the source matches the name @MangojellySolutions) @aharsant @lightweight @Ralph058

@shomThing is though, at The Lab we have maybe an hour to keep the visitor's attention and get them to make their first thing. We need a really low barrier to entry.@MangojellySolutions @aharsant @lightweight @Ralph058

Thanks for the mention and kind words about the video. Yes I am that guy. I decided to make an account here as came from twitter and we all know what's happening there! So out of the loop/terminology, What's the Fablab? As you can see need some guidance on mastodon land 😂Freecad does have a learning curve which I am trying to help people brake through. TinkerCAD is like one of those mac apps that you can just pick up and use.@vik @shom @aharsant @lightweight @Ralph058

@MangojellySolutionsFab Labs are a collective of around 2,000 workshops world-wide designed to make high tech design and fabrication accessible to everybody. It is organised by MIT. You can do anything from decorate a T-shirt to get an MIT degree. Ours is free to use for the community. The official aim is to allow anyone anywhere the ability to make almost anything. https://fabfoundation.org/getting-started@shom @aharsant @lightweight @Ralph058

@vik @aharsant @lightweight FreeCAD's main problem is still the UI. There are so many options and designing an object is way down the list. There are a couple of good videos out there that tell you change the option that is the opening one. I installed the Windows version and have been playing with it. My current Linux machine is a Nvidia Jetson Nano and I intend to play with DNNs on it. I have a desktop with Ubuntu. I probably will set it up and update it.

@Ralph058We've been using Linux to revitalize our lab's antiquated Windows laptops, which have become increasingly sluggish with every upgrade. Still sub-par, but can now run inkscape, Tinkercad and the Arduino IDE before people get bored and wander off when all the main PCs are occupied.@aharsant @lightweight

@vik @aharsant @lightweight I have several Raspberry Pi 3 about. I need to benchmark them against the older desktop. I wouldn't be surprised if the RPi is faster.
