@thenewoilBecoming?... "BECOMING" ?!!!?!That's hilarious. They've been an ad company since they launched Adwords back in their super early days. Not sure how anyone could argue otherwise...

@tootsweet I think they're complaining because it's a slippery slope. First come contextual ads, then come targeted ads. Apple already collects the data, and they're a for-profit company.

@Blort Didn't Google launch Adwords? Or am I thinking of something else?

I think you’re right. Adwords was Google. One of Apple’s big selling points has always been their privacy at the expense of being in a tightly knit ecosystem which they express a lot of control over.I wish Microsoft had just charged $30~$60 for new versions of Windows instead of adding in all that tracking garbage and adverts in the start menu. It would mean less revenue, but their OS would be less dystopian garbage. But it was always silly to assume Apple was any better of a player.

@djsumdog @thenewoil @Blort Too bad Microsoft doesn't copy how Amazon handles the Kindle: You get a discount on the ad support Kindle but can pay a one time fee to have the ads removed.

@thenewoil Well, originally Adwords was developed by another company, whose name I forget at this moment, but then Google bought them, relabled their technology "Adwords" and addedthe paid ad results next to the search results (which prior had literally nothing but a Google logo and a searchbox). On that day "AdWords" was born (although the tech existed before) and Google became an advertising company. It wasn't long before this was their main source of revenue.

@Blort Gotcha. Hard to keep track of it all sometimes. Thanks.
