Recommendations wanted: I'm looking for PC software specifically designed for writing and organizing lyrics. I have STACKS of them dating back to 1991 and I want to organize them. Bonus points if I can sort them somehow, and maybe even annotate with chords and various notes. Everything I end up finding is an Android or iOS app, and I absolutely do not my phone near me when I'm trying to be creative! Thanks in advance! #Songwriting #Lyrics #Musician #MusicProduction

@killyourfm Not sure if it fits your use case, but maybe https://browserchords.com/ by @gregtatum would interest you?

@killyourfm A ChordPro interpreter, perhaps? It's a simple markup language that I think is meant for guitarists but the format definitely allows free-text comments and inline chords, as well as some metadata. The only interpreter I know of is SongBook which is not free but it is a desktop app.https://www.chordpro.org/chordpro/chordpro-file-format-specification/

@killyourfm I don't know about lyric software as such, but for organising things I strongly recommend zim.Zim is available on mac/win/lin, for free. It is basically a wiki model on your desktop, and comes with a bunch of selectable plugins to do things like insert musical scores as long as you have Lilypond installed as well. It will also do tricks like displaying a sort of mindmap of your linked pages, so that you can see how things cluster.Give it a shot. Won't cost you anything but time and electricity.

@killyourfm it’s not specifically designed for lyrics, but I’m using Obsidian for all my note-taking including music projects and it works really well. You can tag, cross-reference etc. everything and I wouldn’t be surprised if its healthy plugin ecosystem had a plugin for chord annotations etc.

@KoekepanNext to Lilypond (that's this TeX-flavour?) I have heard of MuseScore. For musical notes.Lyrics make me think of poems though 🤷When I looked into coding music I discovered something called ABC notation.@killyourfm Does that help?

@RyunoKi @killyourfm It's all about what you're trying to organise, which @killyourfm wasn't making clear in detail. If there are notes or chords intended to go with them, the ability to add or at least attach notation would be important, but if it's just words then something like Scrivener might be fine.

@Koekepan @RyunoKi I suppose you're right that I didn't articulate the end goal. Basically to have sortable, searchable lyric database, that I can also annotate with guitar chords AND real audio (snippets of recordings or works-in-progress)

@killyourfm @RyunoKi Zim will take attachments. Zim will let you search, add tags and index by them, and something as basic as guitar chords can be done with text - which Zim will support.Sounds like your 95% solution right there.

@killyourfm @mconley I might add a Google Drive backing store one day, but you don’t need a local Dropbox install as you can do everything from the browser. My goal here is long-term music management that is backed by just files.I use it on mobile all the time, and regularly take band notes from my iPad during band practice.

@killyourfm it’s basically an electronic 3-ring binder with dividers that you can label. I think it’s very intuitive, not without its flaws, but for me adequate to my needs until they come up with something mind blowing that makes it obsolete! I like that it’s cross-platform so I can fiddle with it on my phone; tablet, laptop, across PC and Mac.

@killyourfm Obsidian might be an interesting thing to have a look at.I plan on using that for basically everything now in my life, including lyrics. It is not a top down system, with those I always had troubles finding things, even if they had keywords.Might be something for your case too.Your could use it also on several devices.

@killyourfm it takes a bit of induction, but it's worth it.. On top Obsidian has no stupid subscription, it's free, has hundreds of community plug-ins, you basically make it yours and it is lasting - means it's not bound to a companys file format.
