This painting is a pretty good litmus test for politics: do you regard this man with respect, or disgust? ๐

Joke is Napoleon is a considerably more interesting historical figure than most trotted out for this meme, because views of him don't fit neatly into ideological boxes. So your regard really isn't "a pretty good litmus test for politics". ๐First painting was "Napoleon at the Great St. Bernard by Jacques-Louis David", second one "The Immortality of Nelson" by Benjamin West.#thoughts #art #painting #oilpainting #history

@adamasnemesis I really wonder if most people have that strong opinions about Napoleon. Do they in your experience?

@aufsmaulsuppe No, they don't. Napoleon remains a popular topic among history buffs, but they're pretty chill about it all.

@adamasnemesis I'd have to say "dislike with reservations." He made himself an emperor, but most of the countries he conquered were no freer. You have to give some credit to the man who destroyed a literal thousand-year Reich, the Holy Roman Empire.

@adamasnemesis Thanks, just like I thought. I did a little research a few years ago in Mussolini's admiration of Napoleon especially in his early years as dictator and had the same impression.
