What can we do to protect against burnout for Mastodon admins? I think this is a serious problem that needs considered. What we're doing now does not seem to be sustainable.

@alexstandiford There needs to be professionally run instances. Subscription-based would be best in my opinion.

@john @alexstandiford I cautiously agree. I’m donating $2/mo to my instance. For a subscription I would pay less (because everyone is paying, I’m not kicking in extra for people who can’t), but probably have an expectation of professionalism I don’t with a hobby server run on donations.

@shel @alexstandiford Yes, although I'm not sure about the economics. $1 a month might not be enough for servers, technical support, and moderation. Elon wanted $8 to merely halve the number of ads, suggesting that Twitter needed something like $16 a month (granted that does seem absurdly high to me).More realistically, Tumblr charges $3.33 a month for no ads.

@john @alexstandiford I’m just comparing to what I get for free on the hobby servers. I could also self host although I don’t know the monthly cost of that.

@shel @alexstandiford Yeah, and the super low cost of the hobbyist servers is probably because of voluntary tech support and moderation (hence the burnout question above).Self hosting on a managed server (i.e. no having to actually manage Mastodon upgrades, outages and databases), starts at something like $6 at masto.host. If you're okay managing the software I'm sure you could do it on a cheaper VPS.But in the end, I think $1-$2 would probably cover it, I'm just not sure.

@john@shel I would imagine that any server is not for profit, so they shouldn't need quite as much money. It's hard to compare to Twitter because they have ad revenue. I think the cost is still substantial, and I agree that the donation strategy probably won't work long-term (looking at what made WordPress open source succeed ultimately was paid extensions.)
