Another Poirot commission. I've been asked to draw and paint this actor in this role more than anyone else. Any thoughts why...? I'm all ears.#caricature #tealcartoons #art #artist #artistsonmastodon #mastoart

@TealCartoons I love your work. Hope you don't mind a question...Do you work from a photo (for people who exist/existed)?And fictional characters? How do you begin!?

@smays I always work from reference photos. Even if I'm doing an illustration of something made up, I use references to get things right. @DrLindseyFitzharris and I have just finished a children's book, which I'm now illustrating, and I've been using ref photos for everything in there, even the simplest things.

@TealCartoons I think for many David Suchet IS the iconic Poirot (I know he is for me)

@TealCartoons @DrLindseyFitzharris Do you look for certain... characteristics ? in a reference photo? Some must be more useful than others. One more question? On average, how long does it take to create a piece?

@TealCartoons I've done two versions of him also. One drawing and one sculpt in clay. He's just adorable I think that's why. He has a sparkle in his eye that invites you to love him.

@CowBear Fair enough. I was never a Poirot fan, but he is a tremendous actor.

@TealCartoons I've only just recently started watching it for the first time. I'm up to the last couple of episodes of the final season. I absolutely adore it and don't want it to end.

@smays @DrLindseyFitzharris Yes, I'm very picky about reference photos. Regarding time, Poirot was a painting, so he was a few days. Most drawings take about an hour and thirty years.

@TealCartoons @DrLindseyFitzharris "Most drawings take about an hour and thirty years."An hour seems really fast but every caricaturist I've watched work drew quickly. Makes me wonder if that's the nature of this particular form (?). Do you get the desired result by working quickly?Have you ever done what are usually called "political cartoons?"

@TealCartoons I think you're being asked to do this character so much because you do an exceptional job with incorporating the original show art. You add depth without overdoing it.

@smays I study a face visually before I draw, so most of the work goes on in my head. But some faces come a lot more quickly than others. And yes, I used to work for several UK national press titles.
