The reason I stopped creating new open source projects was because I couldn't afford to maintain them.I was expected to not only share my work, but continue adding new features, docs, and providing support for free, forever. It just wasn't sustainable for me.

That experience is why I have so much empathy for people working on open source, even those who are being paid to, because the job isn't easy, and wearing many hats is an understatement.

@kelseyhightower I think a related issue is the volunteer/open-source nature of most Mastodon server hosts. As someone considering opening up my Mastodon instance to registration, I'm a bit worried about the costs of scaling, the bad experience someone might have on my server due to some kind of gap in moderation (possibly leading to mass defederation), and how much time it will take to handle all of that in addition to working a fulltime job and being a single dad to two kids.

@oliphant that's the right way to frame this. Running a server for others is a huge responsibility and these days people expect 100% uptime for $0.Be careful taking on unsustainable responsibilities.
