I don't talk about job promotions very often, but this one deserves a little celebration. I just made L9 as an individual contributor on Google's engineering ladder, which means I've earned the privilege of referring to my role as "Distinguished" on all my slide decks.

After using Mastodon for just one day, I gotta feeling this platform is going to give Twitter a run for its $8.

The reason I stopped creating new open source projects was because I couldn't afford to maintain them.I was expected to not only share my work, but continue adding new features, docs, and providing support for free, forever. It just wasn't sustainable for me.

That experience is why I have so much empathy for people working on open source, even those who are being paid to, because the job isn't easy, and wearing many hats is an understatement.

@oliphant that's the right way to frame this. Running a server for others is a huge responsibility and these days people expect 100% uptime for $0.Be careful taking on unsustainable responsibilities.

The cloud is just someone else's computer, power, cooling system, underwater sea cables, networking equipment, data center and the land it sits on, control plane with support for Terraform, insurance policies, roadmaps, and a whole lot of people to build, secure, monitor, and support all of the software that runs on top.

No Stack DeveloperA no stack developer criticizes the stack without understanding the stack. In addition to complaining, no stack developers engage in full rewrites, but don't finish them before quitting or getting fired, leaving an organization with no stack.
