Now the challenge for Mastodon/ActivityPub as its usage grows will be 1) centralization on major/largest instances 2) major instances deciding to block smaller/independent or personal instances 3) regulation by governments #mastodon #activitypub

In order words, there's nothing in place to prevent the same destiny as email, where you can't reliably send messages without being on the largest email providers.

@boilingsteam I've told people in the US to avoid EU instances since various laws have come into effect over government control. Will be interesting to see which nation ends up being the most hosting friendly for free speech, but given their laws UK and EU have to be avoided for political speech.

@boilingsteam instances are easier to setup and manage than email servers. As long as we create more instead of bigger instances, we can avoid most problems.

@Bernard does not solve the problems of instances blocking other instances.

@boilingsteam @Bernard what is the problem with blocking others instance? If an instance is blocked can we still follow someone in that instance?

@boilingsteam is it really comparable? E-mail is a dumpsterfire because they went with a reputation approach which ultimately punishes smaller servers.

@boilingsteam I run two different mail servers, one personal and one for work - aside from tthat time my ISPs DNS had a kitten I've not had any trouble getting email delivered!

@boilingsteam Is that a problem at all, though? The nature of federation is, 1) if you don't engage with people on the major/larger instances, it's not a significant concern for you. 2) If your main engagement is with major instances, there might be a case to move there instead of being on a small instance- if not, not a problem, 3) you have other instances, and in fact, regulation here might make things safer for you if you can pick where you are.

@lucas you may be an exception. Microsoft is well known to block servers and addresses very easily

@bitpirate there is no system in place to prevent the biggest instances from blocking smaller instances on Mastodon. They could do that using the pretext of content control and moderation.

@tnsi 1) is a problem because the nature of social networks leads to most people being on very few large instances. The law of 80/20. So unless you only want to follow your small community you could be cut off from the larger networks.

@boilingsteam For 3 in particular, the danger of regulation is that there is content on your global service (Twitter) that might be legal to view and access in some jurisdictions, but the act of viewing it is specifically illegal in other jurisdictions; With federation, you can block problematic instances or prevent content from instances known to by legally problematic from automatically loading/caching on your instance (ie, illustrated CSAM is legal in Formosa/Japan).

@tnsi for 3 you will end up with larger instances tied to one country's regulation and blocking everything that they cannot control out there. Back to square 1 with federation not working as intended.

@boilingsteam @tnsi i think the nature of large instances and poor scalability of mastodon will lead most people who join large instances to eventually migrate away to smaller ones or to create their own, i know this happened to me t. first account was at mastosoc

@boilingsteam maybe I'm just not high-volume enough 😂 but seriously all of the trouble we've ever had delivering to a microsoft service has come from a parent hitting "spam" on one of our emails. it only affected that person though. (but for several months, because they didn't believe they'd done it, server logs proved otherwise)

@boilingsteam If it's not working as intended because of that, it's because the intentions behind federation are an ideal that does not consider a real world scenario where nation-states act as controlling forces- however, I don't consider that to be a downside. Monolithic social networks already fall prey to that- Birdsite is bound to the laws where they operate, and even others due to specific viral laws that are based on viewer, not provider.

@boilingsteam Currently this is a manual process of adding blacklist entries. As long as they don't fork the Mastodon or put some auto-blacklisting in place, i don't see that happening. They would most likely loose a lot of users if that would happen.

@bitpirate Most users would not notice if they follow each other on the main 3-4 big instances
