While Mastodon is not Twitter, and some people are wondering about how things like #eqnz would work in a civil emergency, I'd like to remind people if you use the Mastodon website you can _follow_ a hashtag. Most of the apps* don't yet support following hashtags, but they will put the posts to that hashtag to your feed.*especially the official app

@aethylred when I think about it, it's absurd that the main vectors the NZ gov't uses to communicate to the people of Aotearoa NZ are foreign-owned, standards-eschewing, tax dodging, regulatory non-compliant, profit-motivated advertising platforms with surveillance capitalism business models. I think NZ needs to drop #Facebook just like the world's dropping #Twitter.

@lightweight> the main vectors the NZ gov't uses to communicate to the people of Aotearoa NZ... and sometimes *pays* a visibility tax to do so. This is the bit that really sticks in my craw. Imagine the public messaging platform that could have been built with the public money (hundreds of millions of $NZ) the govt have given FB alone over the years!@aethylred

@strypey yup. Quite agree. It's negligence and strategic failures across the board. NZ gov't is an ill-advised disaster on just about every front. @lightweight@mastodon.milll.ws @aethylred

@aethylred not the same but there is an unofficial geonet eqnz bot on here which is posting real time as far as I can tell. @,eqnz@cloudisland.nz

@eqnz @CelticKiwi I’m a bit suspect if bots right now, for a bit like @eqnz to be reliable it ought to be running off an independent infrastructure and using an official API, and not just retooting a Twitter feed (I think that bot has a nice admin though)

@aethylred @CelticKiwi To clarify this bot takes its data directly from the geonet api, the source code is in the bio. It has no reliance on twitter

@eqnz> this bot takes its data directly from the geonet apiAwesome! The only thing that would make it better is if it's handle was tied to an official domain like;@earthquake@data.geonet.org.nz or maybe @earthquake@data.civildefence.govt.nz@aethylred @CelticKiwi

@strypey @eqnz @aethylred @CelticKiwi that would be awesome but would require it being official!

@olly> would require it being official! To be specific, it would them to run their own fediverse server under their own domain, and set up an account for their own instance of the bot (or something like it).@eqnz @aethylred @CelticKiwi

@strypey @eqnz @aethylred @CelticKiwi that’s not why I meant at all, major prerequisite before “what should it’s handle be” is GeoNet wanting to have a presence in the Fediverse. The twitter bot is run by GeoNet, this one is not.

@olly > The twitter bot is run by GeoNet, this one is not.Sure. The most obvious way to signal an official bot in the 'verse is to put it under the domain name of the operator. Unlike Titter, where there's no longer any reliable way to verify that an account is official. @eqnz @aethylred @CelticKiwi

@olly > The twitter bot is run by GeoNet, this one is not.OK. Unlike Titter, where there's no longer any reliable way to verify that an account is official, the clearest way to signal an official bot in the fediverse is to put it under the domain name of the operator. Obviously that's not going to happen if GeoNet isn't interested in posting their data into the 'verse.@eqnz @aethylred @CelticKiwi
