@chanezon it's a wasted effort, designed purely to suit Microsoft's proprietary interests. It takes the digital symbol of freedom and traps it in a dingy Microsoft-shaped cage, straight outta Redmond. No thanks. Cut out the middle man. We can run Linux without training wheels (that can't be taken off). Windows is for those whose minds & hardware are already pwned.

@lightweight @chanezon For those of us chained to Windows for business reasons, it’s a damn sight better than nothing.

@justinwilkins @chanezon those of you chained to Windows should seek out better jobs and better employers. Nobody I've ever known *wants* to us Windows, and they many do. To me that's a grave injustice and the best way to punish those inflicting it... is to abandon them. I did that in 1999 - see https://davelane.nz/my-open-history

I’ve never got the WSL to really work sanely, but I’ve also been lucky enough that I’ve been able to run Linux on my work machine since 2012. It’s never been a condition of employment, I’ve just gotten lucky I guess.

@lightweight @chanezon Given that I’m effectively my own boss that’s on me. 😀 It’s a combination of team preferences (I’m outvoted) and client needs with us - doing what we need to do with native Linux rather than Windows is possible but adds a tremendous amount of overhead. So WSL is a good compromise for us

@justinwilkins I suspect that's a cop-out, but ok. I can just tell you that, as a tech business owner, you need to tell your clients what they're going to use. When it comes to tech, the customer is almost always wrong. That's why they need you. did that for 14 years (after I quit the company that was going to make me us Windows). Sold the company I founded to another #FOSS company, without ever using Windows or even proprietary software. It's possible, and I'm still doing it. @chanezon

@lightweight People say "But compatibility!"like it's an insurmountable barrier. It's not. What's important is establishing data standards (and open ones at that) @justinwilkins @chanezon

@nzlemming @justinwilkins @lightweight @chanezon as someone who uses WSL daily I find it excellent. Great integration with Docker and pretty much complete Ubuntu distro, so much of the port forwarding pain goes away.Means I don’t need to run VMWare as much for most of my daily work. What’s not to like.

@plambrechtsen you're still entirely wrapped up inside Windows (the only way Microsoft could use Linux, thanks to its brilliant use of the GPLv2). A better solution, by far, would be to run Linux on your hardware, and, if you absolutely need it, run Windows in a VirtualBox VM. @nzlemming @justinwilkins @chanezon

@lightweight >Microsoft could use Linux, thanks to its brilliant use of the GPLv2m$ didn't even need Linux for "WSL1", which didn't even have Linux in it, but had GNU."WSL2" is actually a GNU/Linux VM (until recently it couldn't run systemd) and GNU does most of the work (i.e. GNU bash) with Linux not doing too much really.Linux doesn't use the GPLv2 well - there's far too many GPLv2 violations in it and there's also exceptions that shouldn't have been provided (and I'm not even sure are the current copyright holders to give). It seems Linus is only interested in enforcing his copyright to note that the license is GPLv2-only (since he doesn't like how the GPLv3 defends the users freedom better) as he seems to ignore all the violations (I would love to see a link pointing to a case where Linus enforced the GPLv2).

@plambrechtsen and, if you 'absolutely need it', ask yourself how you got into that unfortunate situation and set about to fix it. I've been helping people do that for 22ish years. @nzlemming @justinwilkins @chanezon

@lightweight @chanezon Oh, it’s certainly possible in principle to generate docx reports that will work with a CMS in the pharma industry. It just isn’t easy, and since we’re just five busy people with no IT department, there’s a time dimension as well.

@justinwilkins OnlyOffice and LibreOffice do a great job of providing DOCX files - more correct implementations of MSFT's own DOCX 'standard' (I say that with rolling eyes - see https://openstandards.nz/case-study-microsofts-ooxml-standard) than MSFT's own software. Ironically. @chanezon

@lightweight @chanezon This is true, but neither work well with our automated reporting systems, which were built around Word. We could build new ones, sure, but it’s money and time which we don’t have. So WSL=best of both worlds, at least until one of takes a 6 month sabbatical to build something new.

@justinwilkins you're in a bad situation because of past poor decisions, allowing a complete dependence on a single 3rd party corporation for your business' viability - that's negligent governance, unfortunately - see https://davelane.nz/mshostage for more details. Best thing to do? Bite the bullet and fix the problem by removing the dependence. It's the equivalent of having a Disaster Recovery plan or buying insurance. @chanezon
