You may have seen some of this discourse on the fediverse about how marginalized folks should “just move” to a new instance if they experience abuse in their current server. I have seen this both on Mastodon and in reply to people on Twitter. I find this extremely frustrating, and I’d like to tell you why. I have a few objections to this line of thinking:

       1. When someone is abused, they should be supported, not corrected. Providing ‘gotcha’ corrections about the technical nuance of foreign platform tools for mobility is inconsiderate to those suffering. “You’re wrong” is an unacceptable follow-up to “ouch.” I even see people arguing SEMANTICS instead of expressing disappointment or outrage at the source of the pain. You are arguing with the wrong person about the wrong thing.

       2. It is unfair to expect someone new to a system to be an expert in navigating its technical details. We cannot expect every person to become a mastodon expert the moment they create the account. While moving is not the same as being kicked out of a town, it can feel that way. I would rather see people offering their servers as a new home than arguing that "it's possible to move," but perhaps that's just me...

We, the server admins of the fediverse, should all spend a little more time thinking about how we can make our spaces inclusive; instead of correcting BIPOC who have had bad experiences.

So, I'd like to make this offer. If you're unhappy with how your server addresses BIPOC issues, consider joining ours. We're still growing and learning, but we are doing our best and are open to feedback. We want cool people to join us and would be happy to have you as a neighbor. If you need help or advice in doing so, or just have questions, DM me!
