@AmericanIdPod @kathygriffin @stux welcome! I would highly recommend following @feditips. Also, FYI you’re on mastodon.online, so your admin is @Gargron. Happy tooting!

You may have seen some of this discourse on the fediverse about how marginalized folks should “just move” to a new instance if they experience abuse in their current server. I have seen this both on Mastodon and in reply to people on Twitter. I find this extremely frustrating, and I’d like to tell you why. I have a few objections to this line of thinking:

       1. When someone is abused, they should be supported, not corrected. Providing ‘gotcha’ corrections about the technical nuance of foreign platform tools for mobility is inconsiderate to those suffering. “You’re wrong” is an unacceptable follow-up to “ouch.” I even see people arguing SEMANTICS instead of expressing disappointment or outrage at the source of the pain. You are arguing with the wrong person about the wrong thing.

       2. It is unfair to expect someone new to a system to be an expert in navigating its technical details. We cannot expect every person to become a mastodon expert the moment they create the account. While moving is not the same as being kicked out of a town, it can feel that way. I would rather see people offering their servers as a new home than arguing that "it's possible to move," but perhaps that's just me...

We, the server admins of the fediverse, should all spend a little more time thinking about how we can make our spaces inclusive; instead of correcting BIPOC who have had bad experiences.

So, I'd like to make this offer. If you're unhappy with how your server addresses BIPOC issues, consider joining ours. We're still growing and learning, but we are doing our best and are open to feedback. We want cool people to join us and would be happy to have you as a neighbor. If you need help or advice in doing so, or just have questions, DM me!

I decided to take some time to reflect on some of the #QuoteBoost discourse, from the lens of moderation and community development. I expect these are not new thoughts since there's a lively discourse to which I'm largely oblivious.Special thanks to @futurebird, whose posts have been especially illuminating for me.https://write.as/collisiondomain/some-thoughts-on-quote-boosts#QB #QBs #QT #QTs

@PongoTwistleton @futurebird I can understand the intuition that others will abuse the tool, but I do not think the risks are unique to QB and avoiding rich support for links within mastodon really just makes the moderators job harder. The bad actors you’re describing there will still do a “QB” but it will be much harder for mods to enforce policy against them.

@Linux_in_a_Bit @thegibson I prefer to draw the line at preferring technical accuracy (grammar, minor stats, syntax, wc) to the *point* of a post. These replies are more focused on being *right* than developing an understanding the content of the post. They generally treat non-academics like they’re publishing a formal paper, and use small inaccuracies as justification to ignore the value of a post. Here I’ve used the extreme as an example, but it’s a spectrum. See also: debate me culture.

I’m very excited to see the discussion for the @Mastodon post migration issue has picked back up. This is probably the single largest gap between rhetoric and reality on #Mastodon. It’s anecdata, but *every singe person* I mention account migration to immediately asks “oh, so my posts can move with me.” This is, unfortunately, immidiately followed up with disappointment that their posts stay behind. Coupled with the recent push to make mastodon.social the default for the iOS app… we need a way for users to move around SEAMLESSLY. We can make all the technical excuses we want, but if the process doesn’t work it’s not really account migration. Until we have post support, we should probably say we have “social graph” migration, not “account migration,” or we’re really just lying and setting up people to be let down.https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/12423

@stux we’ve found that checking out the IP band also helps find other spam. Just dropping the last octet and searching /8 often helps us see dozens more of them. Admittedly, being a geographic instance makes the ip range blocks easier.. but sometimes I’ll find whole /128 bands of these spam accounts.

@seb Seems like an unfortunate consequence of having the devs run a general purpose instance, without and community focused instances. I expect it’s easy to ignore the local tl on .social, since it’s not really got a “local” purpose.
