@mastodonmigration The biggest missing feature in Mastodon that prevents this is the lack of a way to post only to local servers. Mastodon can't be used like you describe because every toot is public.

@1dalm> Mastodon can't be used like you describe because every toot is public. Not exactly:https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/posting/#privacyBut you're right that there's no way to post local-only and that could be useful.@mastodonmigration

@mastodonmigration Is it possible for someone to describe the storage option? Should I: delete all, delete all except favorites, etc? Which way is best for the instance/servers? 2 weeks, 2 months, alternating months? You all rock. #TipYourServer

@cpep> Is it possible for someone to describe the storage option?I'm a bit confused by wording of the question, but I think you're asking which posts to keep in storage on the server and for how long. This entirely depends on what you're using your account for. (1/2)@mastodonmigration

@cpepIf you're here for casual banter, you could delete all your posts, leaving just enough time for the people following you to see them. If it's for professional discussion, you might want to permanently archive your posts, at least the text, which takes a very long time to fill a significant amount of disk space. Eg the full text of Wikipedia is now just short of 22MB:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Size_of_WikipediaOne season of TV in HD can be that big.(2/2)@mastodonmigration

@strypey @mastodonmigration Hey, thanks for replying. I do not want to burden the servers with years of my home feed (I think the question was - is this a burden?), I think I had worked out to bookmark the posts I want to keep (not many but they do have images) and let the rest go every two months. The swiftness here and the lack of algorithm maybe make two weeks' delete time better, Thank you again - my mind is processing that Wikipedia is only 22MB.

@cpep> the question was - is this a burdenI don't think so, unless you intend to write as much text as Wikipedia contributors ;)> my mind is processing that Wikipedia is only 22MB.Oops! Obviously that was meant to be GB 😁 Corrected now, thanks for pointing it out.@mastodonmigration
