@CliffordTheBigRedDog check out Satellite repeaters. You can listen to ISS and other FM 'birds' with your handheld.Others repeat a range of frequencies for Sideband phone, digital, or cw.Heavens Above for Android is a good app to find SATs.#hamradio #satellite

@CliffordTheBigRedDog https://www.amsat.org/status/ is the cheat sheet where you can see which birds are on.It doesn't sound like John is a very active ham...Good luck! K4NDZ

@ndz Yes, but they are rare. There's a couple of examples in New Zealand documented here: http://www.amalgamate2000.com/radio-hobbies/radio/Index.htmI guess the reasons for them being uncommon is that it's tricky to avoid them repeating noise and spurious signals, and ground based systems aren't subject to the extreme low power requirements that make them attractive for satellites.

@ndz There is one in Munich, DB0UV. Receives in SSB and transmits in FM: https://www.qsl.net/dl5mcc/db0uv.htmlIndeed the reception is sometimes triggered by random signals.

@ndz on UHF/VHF? There's no technical reason it couldn't be done, I don't think

@ndzThe IARU Region 1 bandplan still has allocations for linear transponders at 23cm. I thought there used to be an entry for 70cm that was removed about 6 years ago but can't find the older references.@mquin
