i tried to switch to i3, and now don't have any speech, so that's cool. I'm too tired to figure out what the fuck broke tonight. I put the config file where it should be, and added it to .xinitrc, but nope. Will try to fix in the morning.

Nope, I can't leave this broken, because it's going to annoy the fuck out of me. I don't see anything wrong looking at config though.

No idea what's going on, now I have no sound at all. Nothing I press does anything, and no amount of reboots fixes it.

@fireborn ouch! how do you think you will be able to fix that? that is one of the things that scairs the crap out of me about wanting to try linux if truth be told, and if you know me, or of me, lets just say I make a great beta tester. if it can be broken I will find a way to break it. lol.

@jamminjerry I honestly don't know, I don't think I can. my home directory seems to be very mangled, but everything else seems intact.

@fireborn @jamminjerry I'm trying to work out how exactly installing i3 managed thatI'm starting to think it may be my config, which may be odd. I'm not sure if it's a case of odd permissions though

@celtichawk @jamminjerry Not quite a black screen, if I plug in another sound device I can get speech, but only on login. Trying to get any further goes back to no speech.

@fireborn @jamminjerry That is all sorts of odd.I'm assumin in your xinitrc you can't just go back to exec mate-session at the end of it right? That should exec your Mate install provided you didn't bork itThe only thing I'm thinking of is I made a mistake in the config.Do you have lxterminal installed? If not you can try changing the line about bindsym mod4+enter to exec mate-terminal since you already got Mate installed, then try launching i3 and firing up a terminal?I'm not sure tough, irst time I've run across i3 doing this and I'm not spotting much on the Arch wiki bout it. May be worth tagging @storm on this to see if we can ge more help with this?Hey Storm, any ideas on this one? You're a linux guru and I'm running out of ideas as to what's going on

@celtichawk @jamminjerry @storm I can't access *anything*. Lobgging in automatically starts my x session, so I lose speech, and I can't edit my xinitrc from chroot

@fireborn @celtichawk @jamminjerry what sound system do you use by default? If alsa, this probably pulled in pulse or pipewire. That requires a little setup.

@fireborn @celtichawk @jamminjerry Did you run /usr/share/tools/fenrirscreenreader/configure_pipewire.sh once as your user and once as root? If it works, you should be able to use fenrir even with X running.

@storm @celtichawk @jamminjerry yes, but trying to switch tty with the control alt shortcuts doesn't start speech back up

@fireborn @celtichawk @jamminjerry If you can get into a console press insert+q, it should cause Fenrir to restart, which will bring back speech, unless there’s something else going on with sound.
