Right now, instances feel like servers run by some guy in a basement. The fediverse expects us to all trust our maintainers almost blindly. I don't want a corporate overlord but I need *something* to base my trust on.I chose my instance because it's well run. But it wasn't easy to find! I'm looking for a new level of 'the mastodon covenant', a higher bar so people feel some trust in the instance. It's NOT a guarantee! (Twitter wasn't...;-) But it says "grown ups are here"

@scottjenson Isn't it wonderful that thinking about who runs your instance is even possible with Mastodon? It's always a sad revelation wit Twitter, Facebook; and unknowable/irrelevant with Instagram, Pinterest, Tik Tok, etc

@scottjenson I think that the Fediverse needs some subscription-based professionally modded instances. Expecting small-time admins to commit to being more than some guy in a basement is probably expecting too much of a lot of them.

@scottjenson run your own... assuming you trust yourself? :-)also, what are you thinking the maintainers are going to do? it's not like you're putting super secret sensitive data on here (are you?!)

@scottjenson this is incorrect because you have a choice in instance. I chose mine based solely on the owner of it. I can also just launch my own if I wanted to. You’re not asked to trust anyone blindly unless you choose to on your own.

@danarel but how can I trust that instance? Based on what? I found social.coop, which is very well run, but only after a ton of work. It shouldn't be that hard

@scottjenson @danarel that’s why Mastodon has an official list on joinmastodon.org with clear terms, they’re not infallible but they can help

@scottjenson@social.coop Right now, instances feel like servers run by some guy in a basement. Hey we're not savages here. My fediverse instances are ran from my attic, big difference. The fediverse expects us to all trust our maintainers almost blindly. I don't want a corporate overlord but I need something to base my trust on.Most people run instances that are ran by friends or someone else they personally know. I think that's the best thing you can do. Or you can try to get to know the admin of the instance you're currently on.

@SuperDicq @scottjenson Attic? That's dangerously close to cloud hosting...
