@Tadano@amala.schwartzwelt.xyz Too bad Mussolini was an unprincipled idiot who ruined any potential Fascism had in Italy.

@anonaccount@poa.st @Tadano@amala.schwartzwelt.xyz Uhh allying with Hitler and passing anti-semitic laws. To a lesser degree de-facto crystallizing it as "authoritarian dictatorship" to basically everyone when it started out as a broader, more anti-reactionary revolutionary nationalist movement that had a lot more potential. Being shit at defining it. How much of that is "realpolitik" or just his own egotism is debatable.I do agree with the economic shit Fascist Italy did in the 30's but that's it for the most part, for major stuff that is. That aspect is pretty badly memory holed unfortunately. But for the most part, he was a net negative.

@vivernu @Tadano All of what you described was simply the result of a good grasp of the realpolitik of the time rather than egotism. Italy was a nation with a stunning lack of managerial expertise, regionalism, next to no industry, a small fascist popular base (at the beginning) and furthermore newcoming experiments in political economy such as the New Economic Policy proved to fascists that market-based allocation was a necessity for rapid industrialization, which is why Mussolini kept his anti-capitalist themes well hidden even to foreigners. James Gregor's entire historiography details how and why Mussolini made the choices that led him to formulate "corporatism" as the best economic compromise to guarantee first the industrialization, then the centralization and not soon after the socialization of the Italian economy. Besides, outspoken anti-communism of the bourgeois kind never had a proper face in Fascist Italy. The anti-semitic laws were mostly posturing, while going to war was again not a bad option since the democracies would have never accepted a fascist state in Italy as legitimate after Hitler's prominence in Europe proved itself damaging for the Anglosphere's dominance; the conduct of the war is debatable, but it was not objectively as bad as the Allies described it (John Gooch's books in particular are interesting).

@anonaccount@poa.st @Tadano@amala.schwartzwelt.xyz I flat out admitted his economics are memory holed and strawmanned. That is a valid point. But it doesn't invalidate everything else I said in practice. He still made abysmal foreign policy decisions. He didn't have to pass anti-semitic laws and alienate huge swaths of the population. Tons were against allying with Hitler and the Fascist council eventually threw him out.

@vivernu @Tadano Agreed! The vedas, eddas, anything that isn't Abrahamic in nature is a blast to read. (Granted I'm biased since Judaism basically aped off of Zoroastrians and Islam thoroughly fucked them over after that. Also not counting the shitload of culture destroyed by the Christianization of Europe.)
