You have probably heard this a million times, but if you are still on one of the mammoth instances (Eugen Rochko's mastodon.social, etc.), you should really, really move to a much smaller instance. Contrary to popular belief, this will not isolate you in a silo. The bigger the instance, the weaker the moderation, the easier it is for bad actors to hide and harass, the bigger and more frequent the technical problems.

Won't I be seeing fewer posts on profiles or replies on boosted toots when I'm on a smaller instance?@Rachel_Thorn

@RefurioAnachro No! That’s the magic of Federation. You can see much or as little as you like.

Looking at this here makes it seem that that's not true:https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/14017It says that people on smaller instances may not see all posts. Maybe federation isn't magic after all.@Rachel_Thorn

@RefurioAnachro@toot.cat @Rachel_Thorn@queer.party It depends on how many other instances are known by yours, relays (and follow bots) help to expand the federation of smaller instances. No single instance is able to get the complete picture of the federation, rather each instance can only see partial of it. Therefore, I like the term used on Pleroma for the federated timeline: The Whole Known Network (of this instance).

I wonder why folks keep glossing over that fact when advertising the use of small instances. To me it seems much more democratic if we'd be more transparent about the adverse effects of living on a small instance, so people can make an informed choice. Or maybe I just don't understand the reason for communicating it that way?@Rachel_Thorn

No single instance is able to get the complete pictureThat's a nice euphemism for "smaller instances show fewer posts" which is how I should have put it in the first place. Thanks for providing more detail, let me make that complete by citing from the discussion of the issue I linked.ClearlyClaire said:Basically, your instance knows about toots if any of these is true:someone on your instance follows the person who posted, at the time it was postedsomeone you (or anyone else on your instance) follow boosts or replies to that tootunder some conditions, if that toot is a reply to someone you (or anyone else on your instance) followit mentions anyone on your instanceit was a pinned toot when the author has been discovered by your instancesomeone on your instance manually fetches a toot (by pasting the toot to the search bar)@pch_xyz @Rachel_Thorn

@RefurioAnachro@toot.cat Thanks for the refreshment. Why would you like to see more posts than necessary? I used to add a bunch of relays, but to find it overwhelming. TWHN loads too many posts than I can handle, and even I glanced something interesting it got washed away quickly if I didn't click it fast enough. Like @Rachel_Thorn@queer.party said, super sized instance itself is a heavy burden in running cost and moderation, and they make the fedi less healthy by creating points of failure, which is the the opposite direction of decentralisation.

I'm not talking about the federated stream of an instance, it's about which posts appear in the discussions below reshared posts. Or on profiles I might be looking at to decide wether to follow. The advantages of smaller instances are discussed widely, what I noticed is that there are also disadvantages that are usually not mentioned.Yes, follow bots would blow up small instances, and that may be seen as counter-productive.@pch_xyz @Rachel_Thorn

@RefurioAnachro@toot.cat @Rachel_Thorn@queer.party ah, the replies you see to a remote post are often less than they actually are, but this is universal if I understand it correctly.

If you ask me, the issue is a design flaw in the ActivityPub protocol. And one difficult to fix at that. Clients might work around it, but that brings other problems with it, like increasing load on origin instances. If only it had been designed a bit more like IPFS or so in the first place, but it's too late for that. It's all especially frustrating since these problems have been known since, like, forever: usenet had mechanisms to tackle the problem.@pch_xyz @Rachel_Thorn

Not quite. If you or someone on your instance is in the discussion then your instance will get notified and should end up having that message. However, messages from old threads might get scrubbed again. I heard some owners cranked their cache timeout as low as two days, but I'm not sure if that includes the messages or only affects media.@pch_xyz @Rachel_Thorn
