Or the other way around: so, you don't want to see ads? Then prove that you are under 13...I'll find out by myself, thanks.@rysiek @derwinmcgeary

Unprotected, perhaps? Happens often enough. Anyways, nice illustration, @seb!

Fritter, my favorite unofficial _accountless_ Twitter client for android can fetch follows of anyone without credentials. That fedifinder requires credentials makes it highly suspicious! Don't use fedifinder!@isotopp

Read the sourceNice one :DWell, it's a node.js, and we know that is safe, don't we. I looked at it and its package-lock.json for 5 secs and noticed no security problems, so it's fine, isn't it? The people operating the server are surely very trustworthy, and won't run modified code. Or debugging tools. Or an exfiltrating firewall. On someone else's computer. Right? But you're correct, paranoia incapacitates, and I routinely enter my banking creds into worse, so there's that. And I do feel guilty for abusing your comment space to educate folks about security, as I should be, right? But none of this matters, because as I said: it's technically unnecessary to ask for credentials, so why would they?@isotopp

Okok, that's not very helpful. But the question is nagging me. So let's invoke @Luca: why does #fedifinder require credentials when apps like Fritter https://github.com/jonjomckay/fritter demonstrate that that information is available without?@isotopp

the source code is openThat is a valid point, even though that has its limits as I pointed out earlier. Apologies for my sarcastic style.lose api accessI didn't think about it that way, that you might risk your access to their api if you break their ToS. In hindsight that doesn't seem too surprising in some way, although it does leave a bad taste, that they would punish conforming projects just because an individual has embarked in such behaviour. At least, I suppose that's what they say in their ToS. Are there known cases where they enforced it?Anyways, thanks for clarifying and for your efforts to help folks switch!@Luca @isotopp

Won't I be seeing fewer posts on profiles or replies on boosted toots when I'm on a smaller instance?@Rachel_Thorn

Looking at this here makes it seem that that's not true:https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/14017It says that people on smaller instances may not see all posts. Maybe federation isn't magic after all.@Rachel_Thorn

I wonder why folks keep glossing over that fact when advertising the use of small instances. To me it seems much more democratic if we'd be more transparent about the adverse effects of living on a small instance, so people can make an informed choice. Or maybe I just don't understand the reason for communicating it that way?@Rachel_Thorn

No single instance is able to get the complete pictureThat's a nice euphemism for "smaller instances show fewer posts" which is how I should have put it in the first place. Thanks for providing more detail, let me make that complete by citing from the discussion of the issue I linked.ClearlyClaire said:Basically, your instance knows about toots if any of these is true:someone on your instance follows the person who posted, at the time it was postedsomeone you (or anyone else on your instance) follow boosts or replies to that tootunder some conditions, if that toot is a reply to someone you (or anyone else on your instance) followit mentions anyone on your instanceit was a pinned toot when the author has been discovered by your instancesomeone on your instance manually fetches a toot (by pasting the toot to the search bar)@pch_xyz @Rachel_Thorn

I'm not talking about the federated stream of an instance, it's about which posts appear in the discussions below reshared posts. Or on profiles I might be looking at to decide wether to follow. The advantages of smaller instances are discussed widely, what I noticed is that there are also disadvantages that are usually not mentioned.Yes, follow bots would blow up small instances, and that may be seen as counter-productive.@pch_xyz @Rachel_Thorn

If you ask me, the issue is a design flaw in the ActivityPub protocol. And one difficult to fix at that. Clients might work around it, but that brings other problems with it, like increasing load on origin instances. If only it had been designed a bit more like IPFS or so in the first place, but it's too late for that. It's all especially frustrating since these problems have been known since, like, forever: usenet had mechanisms to tackle the problem.@pch_xyz @Rachel_Thorn

Not quite. If you or someone on your instance is in the discussion then your instance will get notified and should end up having that message. However, messages from old threads might get scrubbed again. I heard some owners cranked their cache timeout as low as two days, but I'm not sure if that includes the messages or only affects media.@pch_xyz @Rachel_Thorn
