@rach Yeah, there's the truism that fascism grows in darkness like mushrooms.Sure, but after witnessing it growing in broad daylight on the bird site/cable & web based news services/ other social media these past few years, the 'grow in darkness' option feels like the lesser of 2 evils right now.

@JeffHowell I think what’s going to be really interesting is watching if there’s a journalism shift. If the left are coming here and not engaging with their crap headlines and hot takes on Twitter and Fashbook, do they go out and do their actual jobs now and find news instead of making news?

@rach Yeah, I think there's going to be a real existential problem for journos, who'll feel less connected as a result of losing that big slab of lefties like me who've been in their twitter orbit. I'm thinking of Gallery journos, and pundits too.Gonna be harder to do their jobs without the feedback.

Imagine if 1% of the far right on twitter and or telegram decide to sign up on Mastodon. You will have 1M accounts to filter through. Then as they do on twitter, when they get booted, they take out another troll account.

@JeffHowell I’d say there will be on climate change. I was following the COP27 hashtag, and Greta is here. BLM also yes, though there’s a lot of discourse around racism and CW from various instances which doesn’t appear to be handled very well.

Some are against CW for obscuring stuff that ought to be widely known. Others are pro-CW as they want the 'verse to be a safe space where their people don't have to engage with potentially triggering stuff, without some warning. There are no simple solutions, but maybe teaching people how to use Filters etc could help?. @JeffHowell

@rach Mastodon offers us a wide range of tools (including Filters) for controlling what's in the slice of the 'verse that we each see. Learning to use them all, is a far more effective approach than trying to control the way everyone else posts.There's an old saying I like;Never try to teach a pig to sing.
