@Yornik @gossithedog AWS free tier is useless for anything other than a few minutes of experimenting. Also be careful with it, it's way too easy to end up with a huge bill cause there's no hard limits.

Does anybody know if Mastodon as a community (lol I know) has a position on instances where the members have to pay to join? I was thinking of setting up an instance with a small fee, which has 24/7 support etc etc - basically so you know your account will always be available to use, migrate elsewhere etc.

So the answer is.. a few of the popular instances are already paid membership and haven’t been defederated. I’m in two minds about it, I reckon there’s scope for a paid tech Mastodon instance, something like $4 a month and you could ensure it is long term sustainable. But I don’t know if there’s enough demand, would need a few thousand active users.

@gossithedog i think it would be a good idea to offer a subscription that gives you some perks like larger upload limit and longer posts.

@gossithedog I think it would deter low volume users, and those that are simply new to the Fediverse. You also don’t want to be in a situation where cashflow issues suddenly lock you out of your fedi-life. I would suggest keeping a basic account free. Charge for specific features instead. (E.g. posting more than N media files per day.)

@gossithedog one thing I appreciate about Hachyderm is that they (the admins/mods) propose ideas for the server and community via Github issues. Folks can comment on these proposals, and then they come to a decision. One potential approach for you would be to setup a Github project, propose this idea via an issue, and anyone that may be interested can chime in. You may find a lot of demand for the idea.link: https://github.com/hachyderm/community
