There are a lot of calls to formalize institutions around the fediverse. Personally, I think such calls should be rejected outright. While the existence of large instances necessitates such formalization and institutionalizing the solution should be to destroy the large instances and decentralize the power into the hands of each individual.

Embrace single user instances. Share resources with your direct friends as part of affinity groups. Any push to formalize power structures only makes them more of an institution. More of a central power and authority.

Large instances and centralizing result in a breakdown of trust. All power is shifted from the users to those running the instances. How do you keep them accountable?Even if you formalize some sort of democratic system (which I don't believe will have direct power of users at sizes above 2K ppl) where does that leave single user instances like mine? I suppose I might always be in conflict with such entities. That kinda sucks.

@polymerwitch@social.polymerwitch.com There's an "Organization" actor type. I don't think anything uses it yet, but I'd think that would be an excellent think to bring into here, and add the ability for accounts to both mark themselves as "Organization"s, and for people to filter out them if they wish.

@ignaloidas That's not really what I'm speaking about here in regards to institutions.I mean formalizing the fediverse into an institution. All of the big instances signing onto a legal framework to standardize policies and governance.

@polymerwitch@social.polymerwitch.com Oh. Missread that. Yep, totally agree with that, it's called "federation" for a reason.
