#Fediverse Pro-tip for The new server, Journa.host, is a sinking ship. It is being increasingly blocked by other instances, you can’t do your job as a journalist if you can’t see the rest of the Fediverse/Mastodon. Switch to a professional journalism server, Newsie.social, where the Admin @jeff, respects the culture of the Fediverse & the strength of diversity.Journa.host is now #blocked by more than 45 servers & counting. Following the Fediblock hashtag, I see Journa.host brought up in at least every 10th post. @admin Not a journo and I think that's a great idea. ALSO I think it would be awesome for journalists on Mastodon to encourage their companies and organizations to create their own instances for their affiliated journalists. It verifies identity and would foster the growth of media presence here in a more coordinated way.

@admin Hmmm. “sharing your articles, live-posting breaking news, etc.” from journalists more used to Twitter. “That doesn’t fly here.”It doesn’t?

@admin Is there a source that documents which 45 servers blocked Journa.host? The article you link to reports there are 45, but the article does not site a source for that information. Also, the reporter who wrote the article has an account on Journa.host.#journalism #media #reporting #mastodon

Best to go directly to the source of that above article to ascertain the current number of servers blocking Journa.host:@mathewiBut also add one more, tonight Mastodon.tech will join the #Fediblock in also blocking Journa.host in solidarity with oppressed communities as @lawremipsum more eloquently said below:“Yeah this is also troubling to me. It [journa.host] drove a trans voice off their server, in exactly the way that weaponized civility harms members of other oppressed communities. They’ll likely keep doing it because it’s baked into their worldview.”@researchfairy@nev

@admin worth noting that the number is almost certainly an undercount because it comes from a tool with a flawed methodology.

@admin @nev @mathewi @Cincyblog @lawremipsum @researchfairy Please do read a bit on what happened and how. As parker explains, she was not banned for any views. She was temporarily suspended for attacking another member who also happens to be trans: https://masto.ai/@parkermolloy/109377879615134816

@adamdavidson @admin Getting onto a blocklist is very easy. Getting off one is nearly impossible.Once the stain of controversy is on an instance, people who prioritize running supportive spaces free from any negativity will err on the side of blocking them and suggesting the others do the same. The domain ends up in a “starter blocklist” json file that just gets passed around indiscriminately.

@adamdavidson @adminIt’s of course within the rights of server admins to do this. Mastodon doesn’t have to be all things to all people. That’s what makes it great! I’m really glad people can do this.My hope is for transparency from instance admins about who they’re blocking, for the sake of people singing up for that instance. Someone may want to follow people at journa dot host (or some other domain they aren’t even aware of) and not know that the server they’re about to join blocks them.

@adamdavidson @admin For safety reasons, however (avoiding harassment, as happened when someone started emailing all the admins of instances that were blocking them), admins of frequently targeted instances *don’t* make public who they’re blocking. This makes sense, but can make it hard for potential new signups to know what to expect from the instance.

@adamdavidson @admin Which is also fine! It may not be an instance’s goal to have many users at all, so, sign up at your own risk. But it’s all very tricky.

@adamdavidson @admin In other words, for many instance admins, they’d rather have only 1000 voices in their federated timeline than 100,000 if one of those might be harmful. They are looking to maximize user experience, not content.

@jsit @adamdavidson @adminNot really true. I am watching moderators in action and have seen 2 server blocks removed from multiple servers because the concerning issues were resolved, just in the past 2 weeks. I also see many moderators taking their time and consider the information available before deciding whether or not to mute or fully block an instance. @jerry explains his reasoning here.https://blog.infosec.exchange/2022/11/20/an-update-on-journa-host/The hard part is earning that trust back will take time, but that is life.
