@clive I think this is grossly overstated. The first result for "how to roast hazelnuts" on DDG is Wikihow. The second is culinaryhill.com, whose hazelnut roasting page has been up since (at least) 2019 according to Wayback. The 8th and 9th results are Martha Stewart and Epicurious, two well-known brands whose pages I would trust.Three of these pages say 350deg; Martha Stewart says 375.I'm frustrated by #AI consuming the web, too, but the AI doomsaying on Mastodon is off the charts.

@anildash I’m not sure I love the Xanga/LiveJournal analogy. It’s more like AOL and CompuServe were to the open web as Twitter and Bluesky are to ActivityPub.I don’t see Mastodon as “the choice for nerds” any more than the open web had a specific audience. The promise of Mastodon and ActivityPub is that these different audiences and communities will be able to interact on the same terms.

Non-rhetorical question: How did email newsletter services like #Substack make reading blogs so popular again? What would it take for #RSS to see the same success?

The fact that Mullenweg keeps harping on #WPEngine’s lack of upstream contributions — something that is by no means required by anybody using #WordPress — demonstrates how weak he knows the copyright claim is.If it were a strong case, he could just quietly file the cease and desist and not go on and on about the values of open source, which are irrelevant to whether a copyright has been violated.

@stux Some of the benefits of sharing the source of a video are that (a) you often get a longer video and (b) you often get more videos.https://www.fb.watch/watch/?v=1460912351205441

Remember, when something in the news upsets you, you are *not obligated* to spend the next hour hunched over your phone reading live updates and social media hot takes. You *can* stay informed without succumbing to this urge -- an urge deliberately conditioned into us for decades by the 24-hour news cycle and exploitative for-profit social media.Step away from your screens, let your psyche absorb the blow, and read about it in a newspaper tomorrow morning if you like. You have permission!
