@withoutclass I have friend who spends dozens of hours feeding the poor by running a food pantry. They are kind and empathic. This is who they are.

@Ricardus oh no, concepts are pretty important. But I also think it's important to recognize that our mental model of who someone is happens to be conceptual. We are in flux all the time, gaining new hobbies, losing old hobbies, etc. There really isn't anything static to point to and say that this is who someone is.If we traded our arms, would we still be our Selves or different Selves?

@withoutclass I think we really already know that answer to that. But culturally, particularly in the US, men identify as being what they do, etc...

@Ricardus Oh definitely. People identify as things all the time, but unfortunately it's a very potent illusion. Our attachment to that illusion causes lots of suffering, usually by feeling like we are the thing we identify with even though it's impossible. Sports fans are an excellent example of this.
