I'm struck by the difference in culture between social media sites. Instagram started as art, and has become simply advertising & scams. Facebook has devolved into sharing "heartwarming cringe videos" and ads. Twitter was my place for a long time, I found great community there. HOWEVER. Since coming here I'm noticing: Twitter is a rage machine. Designed to keep us mad and yelling 24/7.And I only noticed bc here: none of that. #twittermigration

@revjorobertson It's a beautiful thing isn't it? And the two fundamental differences between here and IG, FB, Twitter? No algorithm, and no corporate entity.

And I think the biggest issue is folks on Twitter don't REALIZE how angry we are. The anger has been cast as social justice, as change making. But quote tweeting someone to talk about how bad their take is so *rarely* actually brings about change. I've yelled at hundreds, thousands perhaps of antisemites and have any of them *actually* changed bc of being told off? Or do they intrench bc that's what rage makes us do?

And there are definitely issues OUTSIDE of Twitter, the fediverse is full of humans, which means there are folks here who are racist, anti-woman, anti-trans, homophobic, antisemitic, etc. But is the fact that yelling at each other is harder here actually making spaces safer for those folks, or is it just removing the fuel that amps them up and entrenches them in their positions? BC we know argument doesn't change minds, is more likely to confirm belief (even against fact).

What I mostly notice is that I've yet to have a single interaction here (EVEN on hot button topics) trigger my anxiety or panic disorder. Because I get to choose when I click into things (those handy subject wrappers). And because there isn't an algorithm boosting the stuff that makes people the most riled up into all our feeds. And that might just be a GOOD thing? 🤷‍♀️
