Do you remember the moment that radicalized you against modern day fascism?

@BlackAzizAnansi The 2003 invasion of Iraq was one milestone -- the Bush administration was clearly just finding rationalizations to invade, yet many people said "we have to trust the President", and the Democrats who opposed the invasion were totally inept. I'd call it imperialism rather than fascism, but it's all part of the same process. The next milestone was Jan 6 2022. Again, Trump was clearly looking for any excuse to reject the election results and establish a dictatorship. Yet there have been no real consequences for Trump or the people who supported him.

Watching America's reaction to 9/11 probably did it for me, it was jarring seeing so many adults turns against Muslim folks and lose their fucking minds all at once.

Actually, before that it was probably learning about the nuclear bombs that were dropped on Japan and not getting any rational exploration as to why America intentionally killed countless civilians and harmed whole generations of people beyond "It was just war."

@BlackAzizAnansi How long did it take for you to see anger towards Muslims? I was a bit removed from any Muslim communities -- at the national level it seemed like Bush tried to avoid blaming Muslims, but by 2010 there definitely was a fully developed Islamophobic movement (I remember the Cordoba House backlash at that time, and the 'sharia law' panic, but the 'Rachel Ray Dunkin Donut scarf incident was in 2008 )

@BlackAzizAnansi I wonder what it's like to see something like 9/11 and beyond being sad, and being angry at the people who did it and even scared you also have this other alien sense of being wronged in a way that "your USA" was not meant to be wronged. that... other layer... It was scary

@futurebird @BlackAzizAnansi during 9/11 was very alienating for me. watching americans driving around with their flags demanding god bless them, reading about middle eastern cultures and history... made me realize i was not an american, not even european. maybe the best i can settle for is new york city, alas too much concrete for me.

@barrygoldman1 @futurebird @BlackAzizAnansi For what its worth, I'm a white person. I know the names of my distant ancestors who fought in the revolutionary war. I'm just about as American as you can be but people driving around in huge trucks with "*od bless America" on the back felt pretty awful to me too. I submit that you and I ARE American. It's the christian nationalists extremists that aren't Americans.

@BlackAzizAnansi 9/11 was what did it for me. I was in middle school. Seeing people that I had respected attacking the local muslim community was a jarring introduction to how quickly racism/xenophobia and fascism can take hold.

@jakeduhjake How long did it take for you to see it? At the national level, it seemed to only take hold after 2008 or 2010 (as I recall).

@DecaturNature @barrygoldman1 @futurebird @BlackAzizAnansi a good point.I also want to point out that I misspoke. I'm far from the most american someone can be. The people my ancestors stole the land from are much more American than me.

@BlackAzizAnansi When my own brother accused me of treason after 2016 when I expressed all my concern and alarm about Trump and his new Muslim ban. I knew then, we were fighting some weird shit for its ability to radicalize formally, relatively normal people.

@TinaThePerson @BlackAzizAnansi yes. My whole ass family lost its collective mind around that time. Started with the tea party.

@LowlyAdjunct @BlackAzizAnansi Truly, it started with horrible content moderation/ Russian attacking people's brains with military grade psychological warfare on Facebook. We all watched it happen not knowing what we were witnessing until 2016 really. But damn what a terrible thing so many families and friendship groups have gone through. PS, eventually I got my brother back. He voted straight blue in 2022.

@TinaThePerson @LowlyAdjunct @BlackAzizAnansi The psy-ops could only work because we were open to it -- didn't know how the world worked and didn't know what we wanted. We've always had this paranoia in our culture, just look at the KKK and the John Birch Society. p.s. Glad your brother finally saw what the GOP has been doing and came back.

@DecaturNature there was very open Islamophobia in the US in September 2001. Rumors spread about local families, exchange students received threats. My local community revealed that the people within it were more than willing to cast facts and reason aside to follow a fascist narrative.

@DecaturNature @LowlyAdjunct @BlackAzizAnansi Totally true. But also, I had underestimated the impact initially until I watched it happen real time again 3 years later when I moved to Canada. They were a bit behind the US in social media use and I watched regular people get pulled down deep holes by repeated imagery and verbiage that exploited some natural "leanings" and turned them to a dark place with lies. My brother grieved for 4 days when the damn broke. It's very real and terrifying.

@TinaThePerson @LowlyAdjunct @BlackAzizAnansi Thanks for sharing. That sounds like some kind of horror movie...thinking you've escaped some curse just to have it reappear. I hope the Mastodon network holds up okay when it is eventually attacked.
