Good Night DEC Alpha, you have served us well.Our last DS10L was pulled from the cabinet to make space for #mastodon and the growing #fediverse This machine was put into service in 2003 and ran up until 2013 when it was given less public duties. It could famously achieve 1500+ days uptime only being taken down during maintenance cycles. Never had a CPU fan failure!It ran NetBSD 1.5 up to 6.2. @netbsd it is an end of an era!

@SDF I've never had a chance to play around with an Alpha box but have heard good things about them. I left Compaq about a year before the DEC merger and then came back when it had been HP for a few years. Those apparently were interesting if tumultuous times from talking to folks who stayed.

@SDF @netbsd It was ~12 years ago when I shutdown my last Alpha—a 1200 using Tru64. Similar story; 1000+ days of uptime interrupted only by planned maint. Except for one time in the late 90s.A fan died on a weekend, of course. Corrupted a file system. Not root but prevented booting to run level 3. vi wouldn’t work in single user mode. Had to update fstab with ex which was bizarre. Can’t imagine writing C with it. My respect for the pioneers of the 60s and 70s grew tenfold that day.

@SDF @netbsd reading the specs on that machine really puts it into perspective. Up to 120GiB ATA disks, 300GiB for SCSI, etc.
